Story: I almost missed the love of my life because of his disability

This beautiful story was submitted by one of our fans. My faith in humanity got stronger after reading it. I’m going to let her talk now.

Have you ever met someone who stammered? Someone who actually had a physical disability that didn’t let them talk like the rest of us do? I have. And I wasn’t the most accepting person about it either. This is a story, my story. A story about a girl who fell head over heels for someone she couldn’t even imagine being with at one point in her life, but she fell for him, hard!

This story is about four years old. I was 25 at the time and I had recently got a new job. Had to move to a new city where I didn’t have many friends and was also away from family. The one friend I had took me to a few hangouts among her own friends where I started socialising a bit. I met a few very nice people, one of whom was Jacob. Jacob was the quietest guy in the group. I wasn’t really bothered by his lack of words because he usually always kept to himself even at dinner tables.

It was very difficult to hear Jacob talk, but when he did, he only used to say a few words. My friend told me about him later on. That he doesn’t talk much because he stammers really badly and he doesn’t want people to laugh at him again. I was kind of sad for the guy because he seemed really nice, seemed like a genuine guy who just wanted everyone to stay happy around him, someone who’d want to see happiness everywhere. We used to message each other a lot and he seemed like an insanely fun person on messages. It used to make me feel bad for him when he couldn’t be the same fun person face to face, because of his speech impediment.

A few months later, I get a call from Jacob. It was pretty shocking to me because he NEVER called before that day, so I said "Hey, what’s up? This is a surprise." and after a few seconds of silence, he disconnected the call. I thought it was a little rude so I called him back and he stammered out a sentence saying "I just wanted to say hi". I kind of got the hint that he was having difficulty speaking so I did most of the talking. It was a very brief phone call, nothing out of the ordinary.В He just wanted to invite me over to a dinner thing he was planning at his house for all of us.

We had a little too much to drink that night and I got a little sleepy. So, being the super subtle person I am, I went to one of the rooms and slept on the bed. It was Jacob’s room, I was too drunk to pay attention at that time. A few hours later, I woke up with a blanket on me and a pillow under my head (I dozed off without looking for pillows and blankets). I got up and saw Jacob fast asleep on the sofa near the bed. And then I saw a note on the bed which said "read me". I opened it up, it read:

"I’m pretty sure you’re going to storm off in anger after reading this, but I’m going to do it anyway. I’ve known you for a few months now and I just wanted to say a few things. You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m a guy who can’t even say his own name without stammering for a few seconds, I’m not very vocal because of my disability and it has lead me to a lot of failures and lost chances in my life. For a beautiful girl like you, a guy like me wouldn’t amount to anything. I just wanted to tell you that I can talk a little normal around others, when you’re not around. But when you’re around, I get so intimidated by you that I just panic and stay quiet. I just wanted to tell you that I’m in love with you, and even though you’re going to hate me completely after this, I still wanted to let you know. P.S. You look breathtaking when you sleep."

I didn’t realise that I had started crying mid-way and the tears started dropping on the note. I fell, I fell head over heels for that man. He was so caring and giving and emotional but he couldn’t properly show his true self to people because of a disability he was born with. Jacob is my husband now and we’ve been married for five years. I’ve never been more happy or satisfied in my life before. Being with a man who’s so emotionally devoted to you is a true blessing and I couldn’t have asked for a better life partner. For his stammering, we saw a few good speech therapists in the city and we worked on it together. He’s been talking pretty fluently for the past year now and his confidence levels have boosted tremendously. He makes me proud every single day and he’s the most supportive husband a woman could ask for.

This was meant to be a lesson for the rest of you. Don’t judge people because of the way they are or what they want you to see. Maybe they’re hiding something so beautiful inside that it would make you cry once you see it. Love knows no boundaries.
