Different kinds of people cheat on their partners for all sorts of different reasons. And it wouldn’t really be right to just brand certain people as automatic cheaters just because they possess a certain set of personality traits.

However, there are many experts and psychologists who believe that there are people who have certain characteristics which might mean that they are more likely to engage in shady behavior.

And you might not be surprised to know that data shows that it’s the most extroverted of us who have higher tendencies to cheat on our partners. This is all based on the data gathered and analyzed by Psychology Today.

Researchers have found that one particular personality trait that appears to be one of the biggest predictors of cheating is actually extroversion. There are also other dominant personality traits that are usually found in cheaters such as conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, adventurousness, and curiosity.

People who are generally more assertive, aggressive, expressive, and sociable are the ones who are more likely to be sexually active when compared to those who don’t have these traits. They are also people who would be more likely to take some risks sexually. And sometimes, those risks involve cases of cheating and infidelity with a partner.

The most extroverted people in the world are more likely to be culprits of unfaithfulness and infidelity. However, you would also be interested to know that the partners of extroverts are more likely to be unfaithful than other people.

It’s almost as if the law of averages is playing itself out here just to establish a sense of balance and harmony in the universe. The Daily Mail once reported that a recent study showed that married extroverts are more likely to be capable of carrying on in affairs with other people without feeling any sense of guilt or remorse.

These people were also found to be more likely to possess certain traits and characteristics that are consistent with narcissism and psychopathy. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that those people are automatic narcissists and psychopaths.

The study was conducted by a dedicated expert from Georgia Southern University named Dr. Nicholas Holtzman. He said, “Most people seeking long-term relationships think that extroverts are going to be great mates – because they have positive emotions and they are fun to be around. They are the life of the party – they are very enjoyable.

But our study shows that there is the potential for extraverts to turn towards short-term mating strategies. These are the people who tend to be more narcissistic, more psychopathic.”

He said that if you happen to be looking for a partner who is always going to stay faithful to you throughout the tenure of your relationship, then you would want to find someone who is conscientious and contemplative. These are the kinds of people who would really value traits such as honesty, intelligence, humility, and patience as well.

These are the kinds of people who wouldn’t typically be lured into one night stands. He says, “It is one of the trade-offs a person faces when they are trying to get into a relationship – if they find somebody who is very extroverted, they might find themselves with a mate who engages in one night stands.”

The study actually involved around 1,000 people comprising both sexes from India and America. The leader of the study also looked into the lives of friends, partners, former partners, and other people in order to gain more perspective on the matter.

The study revealed that the people who were shown to be more outgoing and extroverted were also the people who were more likely to be unfaithful and disloyal. Holtzman postulated, “That is one of the most interesting personality variables in the study because it suggests that there are certain people who are high in these extroverted traits that do both, engage in short-term and long-term relationships, and that is something previous researchers could not explain.”

He also published a research paper which concluded that “Extroversion may predispose a person to use both short-term mating and long-term mating, which may lead to infidelity and cuckoldry.” He really tried to understand why infidelity remained to be so rampant and common in contemporary dating.

He also said, “If you are mating you are passing on genes, and so the evolutionary benefit is pretty direct. You are engaging in those short-term promiscuous relationships and therefore presumably having more children and that is leading to your genes being passed on to the next generation.”
