Being a mother is challenging, to say the least. Raising a child is not a walk in the park; it has ups and downs – you are literally caring for a tiny human being 24/7. It’s tasking, tiring, but extremely rewarding.
Today’s story is about a mother who was on vacation with her three-month-old baby and was asked to cover up while breastfeeding.
Melanie Dudley, a mom from Texas, was on vacation at Cabo San Lucas. One day, while having lunch at a corner table, she started to breastfeed her baby, and it was met with undue attention.
A stranger popped up and asked her to cover up. Instead of arguing over what the man said, she quietly covered her face up with a blanket and continued to breastfeed her baby!
While speaking to Yahoo! Lifestyle, Melanie said:
“I was on vacation in Cabo San Lucas with my entire family and a man asked me to cover myself,”
“I’m usually discreet but we were seated in the back of the restaurant.”
“I did have the cover on, but it was so hot. It was like, 95 degrees, and my little baby was sweating,”
Her husband took a photo of her while this happened and posted it on Facebook. It received unanimous praise and support for Melanie’s actions and unflinching maternal instincts.
Her photo went viral and with people responding to her saying it was the right thing to do to care for her child before anything else.
Melanie also has two four-year-old boys who are twins! While speaking of breastfeeding in public, Melanie said:
“It was impossible to do both at the same time when we were out so I never had this problem. With my little one, it’s so much easier to nurse out in public.”
We, as a society, need to be more accepting, helpful, and kind with mothers. It’s already tough to raise happy and healthy children; the least we can do is mind our own business when we see a mother nurturing her little one.

In Europe it was always customary to feed the baby in public doesn’t matter where. I see nothing wrong with it it’s a natural event.
You’re wrong but I do wish it was. In the UK you still get gawped at and tutted at, heads being shaken – thats often from women. Hate from inside the camp. Its just ridiculous!
If a woman or man can walk around naked why would a woman breastfeeding her child has to cover up! With how oeople dress( or undress) surely this is proper
Breastfeeding is most natural part of life, nobody cares if people flaunt their bodies but soon as a mom Breastfeeding her baby or you stare at semi naked people you are scum…

Breastfed my children, now all three grown up married boys, even in public. Nobody asked me to cover up. But I did cover my breast with a handkie, not my son’s face.
Well done Melanie, I don’t understand why people tell a mother feeding her baby to cover up yet they dont tell half naked girls on the street to cover up oh no thats sexy to them, grow up!
I have had people get all pissy with me as well…I simply don’t understand how so many get upset by a mother nursing her baby. If you don’t like it don’t look. I admire this woman for being a nurturing and caring Mama!
Personally, I covered up. Public nudity is a no no in our society but if a baby is attached that makes it ok? Children begin to ask questions way before you’re ready for the talk and pierces are always out there. This hospital blankets are so thin, no harm in covering up, I don’t care to see bare breast while I’m eating or even a shirtless man for that matter no matter how muscular or good looking he is. It’s our society. Maybe the new society is more accepting.
What’s wrong breastfeeding in public? It’s only people with hang ups are upset seeing a mother nursing her hungry child.
