The star’s bizarre outfit created a debate on the internet.
Samuel Frederick Smith, professionally known as Sam Smith, is one of the most talented English singers, with four Grammy awards and one Oscar.
They rose to prominence in 2012 by featuring in Disclosure’s breakthrough single, Latch.
Their famous songs include Stay With Me, Dancing With A Stranger, Too Good At Goodbyes, Like I Can, Unholy, Fire On Fire, and I’m Not The Only One.
Recently Smith appeared on the red carpet of the BRIT Awards on Saturday, February 11, wearing a hilariously bizarre inflatable black outfit.
The 30-year-old hitmaker, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, left everyone bewildered by wearing the balloon-like latex outfit.
The weird-looking outfit divided their fans into opinions – many believed it was a crazy pick by Sam. However, some of their fans applauded them for being brave enough to pull the outfit.
“Don’t fight the culture wars, they say. Meanwhile, demons are teaching your kids to worship Satan. I could throw up,” Liz Wheeler wrote on Twitter.
“Sam Smith is dressed for the funeral of the Chinese spy balloon,” wrote another.
“He looks like a fucking blown up kiddies party balloon, what the fuck is wrong with u all. ?!?!” another said.
“As if I couldn’t hate Sam Smith enough then he fucking wears this monstrosity,” someone said.
“You can just imagine the conversation a few months ago with Sam Smith and his label ‘Look, your music is fucking awful, so we need you to make as much controversy as possible, first we’re going to make you look like a rolled ham, then send you to the brits as a balloon toy’” wrote someone else.
Meanwhile one defender wrote,
“Any criticism of Sam Smith is because zi is a plus-sized queer nonbinary legend who has sold more singles than The Beatles & Elvis put together. Not because zi is an attention-seeking mess that looks like zir farted in a gimp suit.”
“I’m a 49 year old straight white man. What Sam Smith chooses to wear, or identify as, doesn’t affect me one iota. And neither should it you. Keep living your best life Sam, and fuck the haters,” another wrote.
“I’ve seen lots of people calling Sam Smith’s Brits look “attention seeking”, fundamentally missing the point of being a pop star on a red carpet,” a third commented.
The outfit was designed by a London-based fashion label Harri, founded by Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai – an MA in fashion design from the London College of Fashion.
Following the internet frenzy over his designed outfit, Pillai spoke to Women’s Wear Daily and discussed what it meant to represent.
“Sam was having a lot of hate comments recently after ‘Unholy’ about their body image,” he said.
Adding that it took him four days to design the outfit, the fashion designer said,
“I wanted to create an image which people have never seen Sam in.”
