June and Hubert Malicote from Ohio, died just 20 hours apart from each other.
The couple’s son, Sam, 79, told The Daily Dayton News that his parents went outside together and spent their last moments together.
“Everything was fine,” said Sam Malicote.
He told the outlet that his mother, June, 100, gravely fell sick after Thanksgiving 2022 and was put on end-of-life care in the hospital.
Seeing his wife of nearly eight decades in that condition, Hubert fell apart and was admitted to the same center where she was being taken care of.
“He fell apart really,” their son said.
According to the outlet, “He then was admitted to hospice and he shared a room with his wife. They were unconscious for days and their hands were placed together.”
“Hubert died at 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 30 and his wife died at 5:40 p.m. Dec. 1, about 20 hours later. Neither one regained consciousness.”
According to Sam, his father died of a broken heart.
When the Ohio native was asked about his feelings after losing both parents in one day, Sam said,
“I feel sad, but I shouldn’t. Who can expect to live a life like that? They lived a long, happy life together, and they were devoted to God and the family.”
Last year on June 8th, the lovely couple celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary – they even had their birthdays in the same month.
June turned on July 13th, and Hubert celebrated his 100th birthday on July 23rd.
The couple first met in the winter of 1942 when Hubert was enlisted in the US Navy.
“He only saw June when he was home on leave for 13 days. On his second 13-day leave, since he didn’t know when — or if would he return home after World War II — they decided to get married,” per Daily Dayton.
“After World War II, he returned to work for Diebold Inc. where he retired as shop supervisor in 1990.”
After the war ended, Hubert landed a job in a retail technology company in Hamilton, Ohio, so he and June settled there for good.
The lovebirds welcomed three children together – Sam, Jo, and Theresa.
They have seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
After celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary in June 2022, the couple made an appearance on Today Parents and shared the secret of their everlasting love and secrets of their happy marriage.
“We didn’t go through life without problems, but we would never do anything to hurt each other,” Hubert said.
“If there’s controversy, you might have to walk away for a couple minutes. Then you come back in and change the subject or you work it out.”
Meanwhile, speaking to CBS Local 12, June Malicote said,
“We haven’t had one quarrel,” while Hubert added, “You never want to hurt the one you love. Put them first, above your own feelings. If you have difficulties, work them out. I would say don’t go to bed mad.”
Speaking with Today earlier, Hubert said that he couldn’t imagine his life without June.
“It’s kind of like if we aren’t together, the team is broken.”
