Being a part of a healthy relationship is truly one of the best experiences that any two people could possibly go through together. That’s why it really isn’t a secret as to why a lot of people are going to be in search of happy and optimistic partnerships that are filled with a lot of love, positivity, and joy. However, there are those of us who aren’t going to be so lucky in our first, second or even third tries.

Sometimes, we get into relationships that aren’t exactly going to be ideal. And a lot of the time, a relationship doesn’t work out as a result of the consistent practice of poor relationship habits. A lot of people tend to overlook the way that they conduct themselves in the relationship because they allow their feelings to get the best of them. They let their love fully consume them to the point that they no longer stay mindful of their behaviors in the relationship.

And that’s a common mistake. It’s always important that you stay fully aware and mindful of the way that you conduct yourself in a relationship. You never want to be absent-minded in the way that you treat your significant other. You never want to be insensitive. And you always want to make sure that you don’t do anything to jeopardize your relationship.

Relationships are already hard enough as they are. And if you don’t make it a point to engage in good habits, then you might just end up shooting yourself in the foot. Here are a few relationship habits that you might want to avoid doing if you want to keep your love alive.

1. Sharing too much to other people.

There are certain aspects of your relationship that should definitely off-limits to other people. There are certain things that you need to keep between yourself and your partner. You never want to be oversharing when it comes to the intimate details of your relationship. That’s a violation of your partner’s privacy.

2. Being codependent in the relationship.

Just because you get into a relationship with one another doesn’t mean that you should be giving up your sense of individuality. It’s still important that the two of you are able to fend for yourselves. It’s still important that you maintain your independence and your individuality.

3. Giving with strings attached or expected returns.

A relationship should always be a healthy exchange of giving and take. And whenever you give something to or for your partner, then you should do so without expecting anything in return. That’s when you know that you’re doing something out of love and not out of selfish reasons.

4. Arguing on a personal level.

It’s only normal that the two of you would engage in arguments every so often. However, it’s important to always conduct yourselves in a civil and mature manner. You never want to be attacking each other’s character here.

5. Keeping each other from goals and dreams.

You should always be looking to support one another. You should always try to build one another up. You don’t want to be holding each other back from goals and dreams.

6. Creating imbalance and inequality in the relationship.

Always choose to see yourselves as partners. It can’t be that one is on a higher level than the other. You must always see each other as two people who have equal footing. When there is a superiority-inferiority dynamic going on in the relationship, it can generate toxic drama.

7. Holding on to grudges and ill feelings.

You never want to be holding on to grudges or ill feelings in your relationship. Both of you are going to make a few mistakes along the way. However, once your partner screws up and apologizes, you need to be able to forgive them and move on. If you hold their faults over their heads, it’s bad for a relationship.

8. Being jealous and possessive.

When you fall in love with someone, it’s normal for you to become territorial and protective to a certain extent. However, it’s important that you never gain a sense of entitlement with this person. And you shouldn’t be so possessive to the point that you try to control everything that they do.

9. Changing each other to become a certain way.

When you get into a relationship with someone, you should never be treating that person like some kind of science project that you can use and manipulate to your will. You have to respect them for who they are. And you have to make them feel like you really do accept them for their true and genuine self.

10. Being selfish and self-centered.

When you get into a relationship with someone, you no longer have the luxury of being self-centered and selfish. It’s important that you are able to set your ego aside so that you can accommodate this new person into your life. You can’t make a relationship work if you are constantly just thinking of yourself.
