109-Year-Old Woman Claimed the Secret to Her Long Life is ‘Avoiding Men’

Ever wondered what the key to a super long life is? Well, who better to spill the beans than someone who’s hit the big 100! Some folks swear by munching on healthy stuff or doing a bit of exercise every day. Then, you’ve got those who think they just got lucky with awesome genes. And get this, there was a lady named Susannah Mushatt Jones who believed chowing down on bacon was her secret to hitting the impressive age of 116! Crazy, right?

In 2015, Holiday Retirement asked a bunch of Americans who were 100 years old or more about their lives. They wanted to know the secrets to living long and happy lives. The answers they got were pretty interesting! Spending time with family, saving money when you’re young, facing problems instead of avoiding them, and staying active were some common tips. But the most unusual answer came from Jessie Gallan, a 109-year-old from Scotland.

Jessie Gallan was born on a farm in Kintore, Scotland, back in 1906. She was part of a big family with five sisters and a brother. Their home was a small two-room cottage, and all seven of them squeezed onto a straw-filled mattress for sleep. Even though she went to school for a bit, she eventually left to work on a farm kitchen. Later, she became a housemaid for a rich businessman in the city. After that, she had a career in the service industry, working in both the city and the countryside.

Later on, Jessie made her way to Crosby House, a place designed for older folks who needed some care. Gillian Bennett, who was one of the people helping her there, shared with STV: ” Jessie is a lovely woman. She has her best friend here, Sarah Jane, and they are always together. She likes her music and enjoys her exercise class. She is a very independent person and is always walking about.”

Based on the nice things Bennett said about Jessie Gallan, it seems like being active and social might have played a role in her long life. Even though she passed away in March 2015, the secret she believed in is truly one of a kind!

“My secret to a long life has been staying away from men,” said Jessie. “They’re just more trouble than they’re worth.”

While women worldwide might be nodding in agreement, Jessie Gallan’s secret to a long life does have a dietary twist to it.

“I like my porridge. I have all my life,” she added.

Even though Gallan didn’t explicitly talk about the points from the survey, she pretty much lived them. Maybe Jessie Gallan’s way of staying happy and healthy was by spending time with friends and staying active. And hey, she might have thrown in a dash of steering clear of romantic stuff for good measure.

Now, we’re not suggesting that avoiding marriage is the key to a long life. Instead, we’re pointing out that a mix of healthy (and sometimes unique) habits and life choices might just give you a shot at reaching the big 100 and beyond!
