Relationships should never ever be one-sided. There is no such thing as a successful relationship wherein one person just leeches off of the other. Relationships should always have a semblance of mutuality in all aspects of its being. There is no room for selfishness in a real loving relationships. The people in relationships are forced to reexamine their lives and make the necessary adjustments to accommodate another person into their lives. In a relationship, you have to be willing to share more than just your love. You have to be able to share your time, attention, and thoughts to your partner without holding back.

But there’s no denying the fact that we are all different people who have different personalities. Not all of us are as willing to give as much as others. Some of us are passive and we don’t really demand for more in the relationship. That’s just the natural state of life. However, when there is an imbalance with regards to how much a person gives in the relationship, then that could be a source of potential conflict. That’s why it should always be in the best interests of all couples to always be open about their feelings with one another. They should always be willing to give to their partner just as much as they’re getting in return. When there is balance in the relationship, then there is harmony.

That’s why if you happen to find yourself drawing the short straw in the relationship, you should know that it’s okay to demand for more from your partner. You need to be able to establish a semblance of balance in the relationship if you can continue to go on loving and trusting each other. You have to be there for each other as much as possible. Time is life’s most sought-after commodity. It’s the one thing that money just can’t buy. It’s the only thing in the world that we wish we had more of but we just can’t get. That’s why time is very valuable in relationships. When you offer your time to your partner, then you are letting your partner know just how important the relationship means to you. Time is something that once shared, one could never get back. Time is only something that you would reserve for those who mean the most to you.

2. Understanding

If your partner can’t understand you at your weakest and most vulnerable points, then who can? When you’re in a relationship, you have to be able to act like a team. You have to be able to be there for each other during both the good times and the bad. You have to act as extensions of each other’s being. You should both be taking an us against the world mentality. You have to practice utmost patience and understanding with each other at all times.

3. Attention

Relationships are all about companionship. The thing that separates a romantic companionship from a casual one is the level and consistency of the attention that one is giving. As a couple in love, you have to be able to offer each other as much attention as is needed. You have to create safe spaces for one another to communicate and to express one’s emotions. You have to even serve as each other’s punching bags whenever necessary. Whenever your partner wants to express something, you always have to be willing to lend your ear.

4. Empathy

Feelings and emotions are incredibly complex phenomenon. Sometimes, when you get overly emotional, people will tend to write you off as being irrational or stupid. That’s where your partner should step in. When your feelings and emotions are causing you to be unreasonable, then your partner should be there to empathize with you. You have to have someone with whom you can share your overwhelming emotions with. You can’t afford to be dealing with them on your own.

5. Spontaneity

Relationships should never be in a constant rut. In order to keep the spark of a relationship alive, the couples involved must always learn to appreciate the simplicity of their everyday lives, but they must also be willing to go on explorations together. Couples must always be ready to go beyond their comfort zones to discover more of the world and more of who they really are.

6. Commitment

Lastly, commitment. It’s okay for you to demand commitment from your partner at all times. Nothing good in life is ever given. Everything worth having must always be fought for. If you want this love to succeed, then the both of you need to commit to it at all times.
