A woman was left by her husband after they spent 20 years attempting to have a baby. She finally became pregnant at the age of 60. However, her husband had a change of heart when he heard the baby crying in the maternity ward. He said he was too old to handle the crying and decided to leave her.
Serif Nokic, 68, made this decision on the day their baby was born in Novi Pazar, located in western Serbia’s Raska District. He informed his partner, Atifa Ljajic, that their newborn daughter Alina’s crying would disturb his sleep at night.
When questioned about leaving their new mother, Atifa, Serif remarked, “She got what she wanted, and now she is happy.”
Serif argues that living with a baby at his age would negatively impact his health. On the other hand, Atifa also faces health issues, such as high blood pressure, but she asserts that she is prepared to raise her daughter on her own.
“Above all, I am a sick man, I am 68, I am a diabetic and I have a weak heart. It is not easy not to sleep all night and to hear a baby’s cry,” said Serif.
Atifa’s pregnancy was classified as high-risk, and she spent three months in the hospital leading up to the birth. Serif admitted that he had initially opposed the pregnancy idea but eventually went along with it. However, after witnessing Atifa holding Alina for the first time, Serif decided not to stay with his new family.
Consequently, Alina will not bear his last name as Serif declined to register her as his daughter. It is believed that the couple utilized an anonymous sperm donor.
Atifa, who used to work in a textile factory, says she’ll raise her baby alone even though she doesn’t have much money. Although she’s related to Rasim Ljajic, Serbia’s Minister of Trade and Deputy Prime Minister, she doesn’t have family who can help her.
“Whatever happens, whether Serif stays or leaves, I will fight to raise Alina the best way I can and to put her on the right way. I will live only for her,” she said. “I know that it will not be easy, but I still believe there are good people who will want to help me.”
As Atifa neared her 60th birthday, she almost gave up hope of having a baby. Then, doctors told her she was pregnant after trying fertility treatment. Her dream came true when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
“I knew it would be a big risk at my age, but my only wish in my life was that I have a child, and it happened to me. I was not afraid of my life at all, God gave me courage. I have never felt better,” she concluded.
