Aussie Woman Makes Over $600 a Month Renting Half of Her Bed to Lonely Strangers

The cost of living crisis has led to some unusual solutions, like a new concept called “hot bedding” created by Monique Jeremiah from Queensland, Australia. She started this idea during the pandemic when her income dropped, and she needed extra money.

Monique rents out half of her mattress for $631 a month, calling it a “perfect solution” for people who feel lonely and are looking for a cheap place to sleep.

The 36-year-old used the additional income from renting part of her mattress to revitalize her career and start her dream venture, Diversity Models. This modeling agency helps plus-size, culturally diverse, and mature models find work with businesses.

As an entrepreneur and reality TV star, she thinks this trend could become popular among property owners. She views it as a great way to save money, live a simpler life, and combat loneliness.

“Hot bedding is excellent for people who are able to detach emotionally and sleep next to another person in a completely respectful and non-strings-attached manner,” she told Cater News.

Calling it the “ideal arrangement,” the entrepreneur acknowledged the importance of establishing boundaries for all parties concerned.

“It is the perfect situation, especially if you are a sapiosexual, like myself, and you prefer companionship over the physical. ‘It takes two people who respect each other’s space, values, and boundaries to do hot bedding,” she said.

Jeremiah explains that hot bedding is similar to sharing a room with two separate beds, but instead of sharing two mattresses, you share just one.

“It is just like sharing a room with two beds; however, you only sleep in the same bed together, so you definitely want a big bed and lots of space in the room to make it worthwhile,” the entrepreneur added.

The Queensland resident thought of this idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, when her life was turned upside down, much like the lives of many others around the globe.

“At the start of COVID in early 2020, I suddenly found myself single; my thriving business of an international education agency and student accommodation collapsed overnight, and my teaching career suddenly became unfulfilling as education went online.”

She continued, “My life was literally imploding beyond my control. I knew my only option was to innovate and think outside the box, and that’s how I decided to do hot bedding.”

She also recalled the time when she had to set aside her pride and get in touch with her ex-boyfriend. Although they hadn’t spoken for a year, he had shared her bed for two years while they were together.

To her surprise, the arrangement was successful, and she used it a few more times. While the prices have risen with the cost of living, she believes it remains a ‘worthwhile’ option.

“[I] said to him, ‘Do you want to survive COVID together?’ and to my surprise, he said, ‘yes.’ I have rented to my previous partner now twice. He will be sleeping with me again soon,” she told the outlet.

“I will be raising the hot bedding rate to $160 a week when he returns as the cost of living has gone up significantly in Australia and my room is still a beautiful, comfortable room, the size of a five-star hotel suite.”

While some people might find the idea unusual, Monique says it has worked perfectly for her.

“Being an entrepreneur is already a lonely journey as you build a company,” she said. “So why sleep alone when you can sleep with a companion, with someone with the same discipline and drive, while making money in your sleep?”
