A Seattle couple decided to sell their house because they thought it was costing them so much money. They planned to live the rest of their lives on cruise ships.
This is the story of Angelyn Burk, who used to work as a cashier in Seattle, and her husband, Richard Burk. Angelyn, 54 years old, retired from her job and decided to start living on a cruise ship with her husband in 2021.
After doing the math, the Burks left their Seattle house with only one suitcase to live permanently on cruise ships.
According to CNN, “Angelyn Burk has been in love with cruising since she boarded a mega-ship for the first time back in 1992 to sail in the Caribbean.”
Now that she is retired from her job, she decided to live on cruise ships to cut the cost of living.
“We love to travel, and we were searching for a way to continuously travel in our retirement that made financial sense,” she told 7 News.
The couple is now well-accustomed to their new lifestyle and says they do not wish to live on the land again.
“Our original plan was to stay in different countries for a month at a time and eventually retire to cruise ships as we got older,” said Angelyn.
“We really enjoy cruising and being able to visit different parts of the world without hopping on an airplane.”
She said their daily expense on the ship goes up to $100 per day or even less sometimes, which is way less than what they had to pay on land.
“Currently, this year, we have secured 86 cruise days with an average all-in cost of $89/day for both of us,” she told CNN. “Which includes room, food, entertainment, transportation, gratuity, port fees, and taxes.”
“This is well within our retirement budget, and taking frequent cruises has led us to be offered deep discounts on future sailings through loyalty programs.”
Last year, the couple visited Costa Rica, Canada, Alaska, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Mexico.
“When planning out cruises, I try to stay on the same ship as long as possible, as long as it is cost-effective,” Angelyn noted.
Adding about the advantages of cruising on a moving home, she said, “Where else can you have your resort take you to different countries while relaxing by the pool or sleeping in a comfortable bed?”
Their favorite destination is Singapore and they have more plans to travel far and wide in the near future. We wish this couple safe sailing and hope they live their dreams with each other forever!
