Crystal Hefner Reveals the ‘Price’ She Paid for Marrying 86-Year-Old Hugh Hefner

Crystal Hefner has revealed details about her marriage to Hugh Hefner, expressing that she was never genuinely in love with him and paid a significant price for marrying him. Set to release her memoir, “Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself,” Crystal discusses the “toxic objectification and misogyny” she faced at the Playboy Mansion.

The memoir’s title reflects Hefner’s desire for her to only speak positively about him. Crystal, who was wed to Hugh Hefner from 2012 until his passing in 2017, has come to realize that genuine love was lacking in their relationship, considering she was 26 and Hefner was 86 at the time of their marriage.

In a conversation with PEOPLE, Crystal confessed, “I thought, ‘Wow, if I just like everything that he likes and do all the things that he wants me to do, then I’m the favorite.’ And I was, but I just lost myself in the process.”

Her portrayal of the Playboy Mansion diverges from its glamorous public image, as she describes it as falling apart, feeling “kind of run down and gross after a while.” Crystal attributes the deteriorating condition of the mansion to neglect and excessive partying.

During the interview, Crystal revealed Hefner’s purportedly controlling behavior towards the girls in the house. She stated that Hefner would dictate details as minor as the color of their nail polish and would comment on their hair roots. According to Crystal, she would bleach her hair and endure scalp burns to conform to Hefner’s standards.

Crystal, who initially agreed to marry Hefner on Christmas Eve 2010, later understood the uneven power dynamic in their relationship, prompting her to escape. She characterizes the Playboy Mansion as a realm of success and fantasy, where “everyone’s having to sleep with an 80-year-old. There’s a price. Everything has a price.”

Crystal assumed the role of Hefner’s caregiver in his final years but confesses that, despite her affection for him, she was never ‘in love’ with the Playboy magnate.

In another development related to Hefner, Kendra Wilkinson, now 38, shared her not-so-good experiences as Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend at the Playboy Mansion and the enduring impact it had on her mental well-being.

At the age of 18 in 2004, Kendra met Hugh Hefner at his 78th birthday party while she was working as a painted lady. Intrigued by her, Hefner invited her to become one of his girlfriends.

Kendra lived at the Playboy Mansion until 2009 when she encountered her future husband, Hank Baskett. While participating in the reality show “Girls Next Door,” Kendra was one of Hefner’s three girlfriends, alongside Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt.

Kendra Wilkinson has opened up about her mental health struggles after her time at the Playboy Mansion, revealing doubts about the decisions she made in her youth.

Following a severe panic attack in September that led to her hospitalization, Kendra spoke to People about hitting rock bottom last year. She confessed, “I was dying of depression. I was hitting the end of my life, and I went into psychosis. I felt like I wasn’t strong enough to live anymore.”

She attributes many of her struggles to her experiences at the mansion, stating, “It’s not easy to look back at my 20s. I’ve had to face my demons. Playboy really messed my whole life up.”

Entering the Playboy mansion at the age of 18, three years before reaching the legal drinking age, Kendra embraced the party lifestyle. However, she now openly acknowledges regret for the choices she made during her time there.

“I really got into deep regret [afterward]… deep. I struggled with depression before and at the mansion. I drank a lot. I was there for the partying, OK, let’s just be real. I was not there for Hugh Hefner to be my boyfriend,” she told PEOPLE.

Now, Kendra is actively working to break free from the “vortex of horrible things” in her past and focus on her burgeoning real estate career.
