Bruce Willis’ Family Shares How His Health Had Been Declining for a Long Time

Famed action star Bruce Willis made the headlines recently when his family announced that the actor was retiring from the entertainment industry after being diagnosed with aphasia. The retirement came as a shock to many of the actor’s fans, as his abrupt exit from the movie business has left many sad and heartbroken.

Aphasia is a language disorder that compromises a person’s ability to comprehend language. This means that diagnosed aphasia patients are known to have trouble understanding speech and even talking themselves.

An Unfortunate Announcement

Bruce Willis’ family posted a heartbreaking post on Instagram, thanking all of Bruce’s fans for their massive support and explaining what the family had been going through:

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,”

“As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”

The statement went on to read:

“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

A Storied Career

Bruce shot to stardom back in the late 1980s when he starred opposite Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting. But many consider Willis’s swansong to be his performance of the iconic John McClane in the Die Hard movie franchise. The actor has been nominated for five Golden Globes and three Emmys. He also starred in other films like Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, and the Moonrise Kingdom.

Aside from his acting career, Willis has also made waves as a professional singer. In fact, his cover of Under the Boardwalk managed to secure the number two spot in the U.K. singles chart. The actor was also a member of various Broadway productions. He made his debut on musical theater’s grandest stage back in 2015 with a revival of Misery.

Long-Time Condition

While the family has just recently announced Willis’s health condition, some members of the movie industry have already come out to say that they had taken notice of Willis’s diminishing cognitive function and performance over the past few years.

In an interview that he had given the Los Angeles Times, director Mike Burns opened up about Bruce’s struggles on his set of the 2021 film Out of Death that Willis starred in. During the interview, Burns revealed that he had cut a significant portion of Bruce’s script because of the actor’s inability to remember his lines. Burns claims that he cut as many as five pages of dialogue on the film for Bruce.
