Life ends, but love doesn’t!
Watching a loved one die is the most difficult thing in the world. When you know they will leave soon, and you just cannot do anything about it.
All you can do is take care of them while they are still alive and make sure you do everything they wish for.
A British TV series, Gogglebox Stand Up To Cancer Special Show, featured a heartbreaking true story of a dying man named Brett, who held onto his remaining breaths just so that he could meet his newborn daughter.
In the episode, Brett’s wife, and the love of his life – Nicola, shared their beautiful love story.
Both Brett and Nicola were very young when they started their careers as teachers. They were both newly qualified. They met at work and got along really well. Soon they became best friends, only to realize later that they had feelings for each other.
She said they were really good friends but what they had was more than ‘friendship’ so they decided to get married.
Soon they tied the knot and started their “happily ever after” with high hopes and big dreams. But they didn’t know what was coming their way!
Nicola said they both loved children and wanted to become parents as soon as possible. “It was a mutual decision,” she said.
Soon they had a baby girl coming their way. She said they were very excited and thrilled when they learned about her pregnancy, “Bret always wanted to be a dad, and he was such a good dad to his girls.”
She said that everything was going great when suddenly, she noticed some changes in his health, and they weren’t good. So, they consulted a doctor and got him tested.
“I noticed some minor changes in him, in his health condition. But he laughed it off.” She said.
Unfortunately, when his test results came, they weren’t ‘good news’; they learned that Brett had cancer; a brain tumor.
She told in the video that they didn’t waste any time and started his treatment. The doctors asked them to stay hopeful.
“He was taking his medicines and all the precautions, and he was doing fine. We were positive.”
The couple welcomed their two daughters, one after the other. Things were good; Brett was taking his meds and following the doctor’s instructions completely.
But his health deteriorated with time, and when she became pregnant with their third child, Arya, “it got really bad.” Said Nicole.
The doctors asked them to go for surgery “because the tumor had become aggressive.”
“We sat down with his neurologist, and they went through the extremes of what the surgery could lead to. We almost started to panic, and they took as much of the tumor away as they could. When the tumor grew back when I was pregnant with Arya, it was more aggressive. It couldn’t be operated on.” She said.
Then three months later, he suffered a seizure. And it happened when she was in labor. She was in the hospital and was about to give birth to their youngest daughter.
Brett was taken to the hospital where doctors examined him and said he won’t make it.
So, the baby was delivered, and she asked the doctors to keep her husband alive so that he could meet his newborn daughter, at least one.
Nicola’s mother drove her to see Brett.
“It was like a race against time to make sure we were ok but could get going [to the hospital he was in]. I knew what was gonna happen, and I wanted him to know that it was ok. I told him it’s ok, don’t hurt yourself anymore.“
She said that she laid her newborn baby girl in his arms and described what she looked like. They stayed like that for at least three hours. Then the doctors came and monitored him. “He was gone.” She sobbed.
The young mother of three shared that her husband spent the last three hours of his life with their youngest daughter while she was resting in his arms. “Arya was born at 5:07 am on February 19, and he passed away at 8:25 am.”
The episode showed that Brett’s older daughters, Freya and Ella, still remember their “superhero” dad and believe he sends them feathers to let them know that he is looking after them.
