Football Legend Pelé Dies at 82

The Brazilian football legend and three times World Cup winner has passed away at the age of 82.

The only soccer player in history who won three World Cup tournaments in his career has died in Sao Paulo. He was admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital and was fighting colon cancer.

According to CNN, “Pelé was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo in late November for a respiratory infection and for complications related to colon cancer. Last week, the hospital said his health had worsened as his cancer progressed.”

The greatest player of all time is recognized as a global icon as he won his world cup tournament for Brazil at the age of 17.

He scored 77 goals in 92 matches and became an icon of the sport. The world loves him for his contribution to football.

The greatest player of all time had been suffering from kidney and prostate issues in recent years.

“Pele had surgery to remove a tumor from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo after the tumor was detected in routine tests. He was readmitted to the hospital in late November 2022, wrote BBC.

His daughter, Kelly Cristina Nascimento, confirmed the news of his passing on her Instagram account.

“Everything we are is because of you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” she wrote almost an hour ago.

Meanwhile, an obituary was also posted on the legend’s official Instagram account that read,

“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. In his journey, Edson charmed everyone with his brilliance in sport, stopped a war, performed social work around the world, and spread what he most believed to be the cure to all our problems: love.”

“Your message in life will become a legacy for generations to come.”

“Love love and love forever,” the post read.

The entire football world is mourning the loss of its king.

“My deep condolences to all of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Edson Arantes do Nascimento. A mere “goodbye” to the eternal King Pelé will never be enough to express the pain that the entire football world is currently embracing. An inspiration to so many millions, a reference yesterday, today, and forever.”

“The love you always showed me was reciprocated in every moment we shared even from distance. He will never be forgotten and his memory will live forever in each and every one of us football lovers. Rest in peace, King Pelé,” Cristiano Ronaldo posted on his Instagram.

Current world champion Lionel Messi also shared a post on his Instagram and penned,

“Rest in peace, Pele.”

Brazilian football player, Neymar Júnior said that the king has gone, but his magic will remain forever.
