In a recent interview, the dashing actor shared some new details of his proposal to his human rights attorney wife, Amal Clooney.
The Ocean’s Eleven actor sat in an interview with Drew Barrymore and revealed that when he proposed to his Amal with a 7-carat-diamond ring, she thought it belonged to one of his ex-girlfriends.
“It was a disaster, I planned it out, I planned the whole thing out,” he said.
“I’ve got the ring in a little drawer behind her, I’ve made dinner and we had only been dating for about six months. I was going to give her the ring right at this song Why Shouldn’t I,” he added.
“So, I got the ring in the drawer and the song starts and I told her there was a lighter can you get it – we had a candle on but I blew it out so she could get the lighter.”
The ER actor said that when Amal pulled out the ring from the drawer, she thought some ex-girlfriend of George had left it over there by mistake.
“She says, ‘Oh, there’s a ring there like somebody left a ring there years earlier.” He rolled his eyes.
“And I am like on my knee like… and now the song is playing and – we know exactly how long [the proposal] took because of the playlist.”
“She didn’t say yes till Goody Goody,” he told Drew. “But that was supposed to be later when we were dancing.”
“She kept saying ‘Oh my God, oh my God,’ clearly overwhelmed by the proposal.”
“Then I said to her, ‘Listen, I’d like to marry you, but I am also not young, and I have been on my knee now… I feel like I could lose a hip,” he laughed. “She said oh yes, and then she said yes, thank God. So I pulled it off!”
Clooney met Amal in July 2013 when a mutual friend introduced them at a dinner party at George’s home in Italy. The actor got smitten by the Lebanese-British Barrister and sent her an email a few days after the dinner.
After communicating through email for several months, the duo met for their first official date in London.
“Amal ended up getting a quick introduction to the spotlight when the evening was captured by the paparazzi,” PEOPLE Magazine reported.
Despite the age difference of seventeen years, the couple got along really well, and just a few months into their relationship, they started vacationing together.
Previously while speaking to E! News, the Batman actor said that although many people believe they have a huge age gap between them and that would probably make things complicated, it’s the opposite for them.
According to George, he took a lot of time after his divorce to choose a partner, and when he met Amal, he knew he was making the right choice.
“The long wait has provided me with a level of maturity that makes me the perfect partner for Amal. We agree on most things, and we don’t argue; we almost never argue,” he said.
“When you’re 61, which apparently I am… As you get older, you’re kind of looking at things a little differently.”
He said people often worry about the age gap between him and the human rights lawyer, but he has always found the difference ‘helpful’ in establishing a healthy relationship.
“You see, Amal wants to paint the wall yellow, and if I was younger, I feel like that’s a stupid color. And now you just go, ‘I don’t care. Who cares if a wall’s yellow?’” he explained.
When he was asked to give relationship advice to his fans, Clooney said,
“Because I started so late, I’m not allowed to give advice to anyone. I have to look at it as if I’m the luckiest human being alive and then just appreciate that.”
