Earlier this month, the famous Depp-Heard defamation trial reached its end after almost six weeks. On June 2, 2022, the seven-member jury unanimously decided that Amber Heard defamed her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, by writing an op-ed in the Washington Post in 2018.
The actress was asked to pay 10 million dollars in damages to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, and she will receive 2 million dollars from him.
There have been many controversies since the beginning of this trial. The case involved so many people related to both Amber and Johnny, and we had seen them making their testimonies during the case.
Social media also played a crucial role throughout the six-week trial. Thousands of people used digital apps, raised their voices, and shared their opinions. The majority sided with the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ actor and supported him.
Hundreds of hashtags did rounds on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram, using which people demanded justice for Johnny Depp and called Amber Heard a ‘liar’ and a ‘manipulator.’
Recently the Aquaman actress spoke on NBC: Today Show; this is her first interview with a TV channel after the conclusion of her trial. The interview will be aired in portions on NBC throughout the week.
In the first preview clip released Monday, Heard shared her sentiments about social media’s role during her trial.
While speaking to Savannah Guthrie, she said that she wouldn’t blame the jury for its decision, but it’s the social media; the campaigns, the petitions, hashtags, trends, cancel culture, and whatnot that she thinks played a huge ROLE in the trial and not a FAIR one.
“You cannot tell me that you think this has been fair.”
“I know He’s a beloved character and people feel they know him; He’s a fantastic actor. But it doesn’t mean that he always speaks the truth.”
The actress further added that,
“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgment you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home in my marriage, behind closed doors.”
“I don’t presume the average person should know these things, so I don’t take it personally.”
“But, even somebody who is sure I am deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I am lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation.”
In a statement given to Sky News, Amber Heard’s spokesperson said that the actress has finally decided to open up about her feelings regarding the verdict and what happened during the trial, both in and outside court.
“Ms. Heard simply intended to respond to what they aggressively did, and she did so by expressing her thoughts and feelings, much of which she was not allowed to do on the witness stand.”
After the interview, her PR team told Newsweek that as the Pirates actor and his attorneys have blanketed the media, the Aquaman actress feels she should also speak up about her feelings.
“Johnny Depp’s legal team blanketed the media for days after the verdict with numerous statements and interviews on television, and Depp himself did the same on social media.”
