Marques Houston, 41, Says Women His Age Often Comes With ‘Baggage and Kids’

American R&B singer Marques Houston first made headlines in 2020 when he married a 19-year-old teenager.

The Sister, Sister star married his now-wife, Miya Dickey, in 2020 when he was 39 and she was only 19 years old.

Houston faced massive criticism over his relationship with Miya when he announced their engagement in 2020 after five months of relationship.

Miya is 22 now, and together the couple welcomed a baby girl in 2021.

In a new interview with Page Six, Houston once again defended his decision to marry a 19-year-old and said women his age comes with baggage and kids.

“A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid. Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me,” he said.

“I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own,” he told us. “But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.”

He continued, “I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddy‘s are about. So if you’re gonna have kids, make sure it is with a woman that never had kids. So that was always my red flag… and a woman with an attitude. I don’t like women with funky attitudes.”

The dancer and model insisted that he is 41 and could have married a 44-year-old woman, and their union could be a disaster.

“I’m 41, she is 22. I could’ve married a 44-year-old woman, and it could’ve been disastrous,” he told Page Six.

“Women that are my age… they kind of have a different outlook on life. Like a lot of women my age are very independent. They are very like, ‘I don’t need a man to do this for me ’cause I can do it for myself.’ I come from a generation that I love to provide for my wife.”

He further said that he had dated many women before Miya; some had kids and baggage, and some didn’t. But no one managed to steal his heart as Miya did.

“There’s a lot of women my age I’ve dated, they may have baggage. They may have kids, they may not. There’s so many different women I’ve been with throughout my life, and it just so happens to be that this one [Miya] caught my heart. Everything that I prayed for — and everything that I wanted in a woman — she came with. Although she was young, I’m young in spirit.”

  1. Its his right. Every person has a right to decide and wait till they feel the person is right and with whom they hope to spend the rest of their life. That said, we women red-flagged are independent and do not rely on men for needs but WANT the men in their lives if there. So, my words to him and others with this thought is, do not be surprised when your “chosen one” grows up…to your age maybe…and realize they have been sheltered, manipulated and growth stifled and want to see what else is out there. A tried woman knows exactly what she will and will not put up with and, most the time will not hide that (hence, the attitude). I will not disagree with the sentiment of, dealing with anothers children is challenging. But, marrying a young woman who has limited experiences is bound to have those moments they want them. They have time to develop that “attitude” so, he is sorely mistaken that he stayed single so long and found ‘the one’ for always…possibly. My red flags were men who never married into their 40’s as, typically they wanted undying servitude and godlike worship. Most women with attitudes and children…not happening! Best Wishes.
