We’re all familiar with that classic Blink 182 song, right? They say that nobody likes you when you’re 23. It’s such an iconic line because it fits so well within the song, and it’s true in real life as well. There’s just something so unlikeable about 23-year-olds.
But what is it? Most people can’t quite put their finger on it. You might think that this is only a random number pulled out of a hat. But it’s not. There are certain character traits and personality developments that take place when you’re 23 that can make you a disaster to be with.
Twelve probable reasons why nobody likes you when you’re 23:
1. You Still Get Distracted Too Easily
Instead of focusing on all of the essential things in life, you’re just being completely reckless. You’re obsessing over the complexities over that latest episode of Stranger Things instead of actual political issues or world problems. You seem not to have all of your priorities straight because you’re easily distracted by all of the flashes of new media. This is what happens when you grow up with a lot of styles but with very little substance.
2. You Mistake Perfume for Actual Laundry Detergent
By now, you still probably haven’t learned the importance of having a clean collection of laundered clothing. You are entirely content with wearing the same shirt and jeans combo for multiple days before deciding to do the laundry. Right now, you think that just spraying Axe perfume on your clothes is enough. But in reality, that isn’t doing nearly enough.
3. You Don’t Care So Much About How You Dress
Right now, you’re still at that rebellious phase. You tell other people that you don’t want to spend too much on fancy clothes because you don’t care about what others think. In reality, you’re just broke and selfish. In the real world, how you dress says a lot about your kind of personality. Somehow, you think that you’re the exception to the rule because you’re unique. But that’s not the case at all.
4. You Still Talk Way Too Much About College
The college was great. It’s probably one of the most critical stages of anyone’s life. However, it’s annoying when you’re a young adult, and you’re still obsessing over college as if it were yesterday. Keep in mind that the people you’re interacting with probably have profound careers and professional lives. They aren’t obsessing over college anymore. So, if you’re still obsessing over it, then you’re probably the only one.
5. You Jump from One Relationship to the Next
A lot of people struggle with romance and relationships in adulthood. They so desperately want to lock themselves down with the one. Yet, they see you just casually jumping from one relationship to the next as if you aren’t taking any of them seriously. Can you imagine how irritating this is from the outside looking in?
6. You Don’t Spend Weekends at Home
You don’t HAVE to go to the bar every Friday night. Sometimes, it’s okay for you to stay home and be at peace with yourself. However, as a young 23-year-old, you still have a lot of energy. So, naturally, it’s very annoying when you pester older adults on going out every weekend because they don’t have the time or energy to do so.
7. You Still Think Practical Jokes are Funny
Practical jokes were funny when we were twelve. They might have even been funny when we were in college. But now that you’re 23, you have to know that nobody finds practical jokes funny anymore. It would be best for you to avoid making jokes altogether because…
8. You Just Have a Terrible Sense of Humor Overall
Again, it’s an awkward phase. Developing your sense of humor is essential. However, when you’re 23, you’re still stuck in that phase wherein you laugh at fart jokes that have no real depth or complexity. So, you might crack some jokes here and there that are funny to you but aren’t to others.
9. You Think Only of Yourself
Of course, you’re just thinking of yourself. This is the earliest stage of your adult life. You want to get started on everything. However, in the process, you’re also alienating all of the people around you. This is because you are only ever really concerning yourself with your own needs.
10. You Still Have No Direction in Life
At this point, it’s highly unlikely that you’re following any kind of plan that you might have set for yourself. The truth is that the plans that kids make for themselves in college rarely ever pan out the way that they expect it to. So, you’re now stuck in an awkward stage wherein you have to think on the fly, but you don’t know-how.
11. You Take Yourself Too Seriously, or You Don’t Take Yourself Seriously Enough
It’s either you’re too much, or you’re not enough. This is something that a lot of 23-year-olds are guilty of. It’s either you think that you’re going to change the world, and you have little time left to do it, or you’re content with letting life pass you by. The key to achieving optimal happiness in adulthood is moderation. You have to live a life of structure and purpose. But you also have to make sure that you’re not just working yourself to death. There should always be room for fun and recreation.
12. What’s My Age Again?
Of course, some of us will be exceptions to the rule. Admittedly, there are 23-year-olds out there who don’t act their age. And that’s a good thing. Undoubtedly, 23 is an awkward age in young adulthood. You’re not old enough to have the wisdom that comes from experience and understanding. But you’re not young enough so that your lapses of judgment are forgivable and cute either. This is why you’re just so hard to like when you’re at this age. No matter. You’ll be 24 eventually.
