The Met Gala has returned!
Pierce Brosnan never fails to impress – The 69-year-old Mamma Mia actor made his Met Gala debut with his beautiful wife of 22 years, Keely Shaye Smith, on Monday, May 1.
And for his first-ever Met Gala appearance, Brosnan made sure he dressed to impress everyone – the GoldenEye star looked as dapper as ever in a printed black tuxedo paired with a white shirt underneath and a bowtie.
On the other hand, journalist and author Shaye, 59, wore an all-black ensemble with a glittery see-through diamanté cape over the top. She accessorized her look with beautiful pearl earrings.
The fashion’s biggest night was attended by all the big names in the industry, including Kim Kardashian, Anne Hathaway, Paris Hilton, Cara Delevingne, Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes, Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat, Harry Styles, Tom Holland, Bad Bunny, Ashley Graham, Jennifer Lopez, Gal Gaddot, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and many others.
The theme of this year was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty – to honor the late creative director of Chanel, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85.
Lagerfeld’s famous pet cat, Choupette, was also invited to the event.
The decision to honor the late fashion icon has met with controversy because of his offensive remarks against the #MeToo movement, racism, and speaking against same-sex marriages.
“I’m against it for a very simple reason: In the 60s they all said we had the right to the difference. And now, suddenly, they want a bourgeois life,” Karl told Vice of his opposition to same-sex marriage concept in 2010.
“It’s difficult to imagine—one of the papas at work and the other at home with the baby. How would that be for the baby? I don’t know. I see more lesbians married with babies than I see boys married with babies. And I also believe more in the relationship between mother and child than in that between father and child.”
While half of the world is currently drooling at their favorite celebrities’ choice of outfits for the ceremony, the other half is slamming the event for honoring the late misogynistic fashion designer.
“Karl Lagerfeld was a racist, fatphobic misogynist and I’m fuming this night of fashion is all about him. I just want to enjoy the looks! F**k Karl Lagerfeld,” one wrote on Twitter.
“I’m losing my mind that the #MetGala this year is about honouring Karl Lagerfeld but nearly everyone given an invite to attend he would never have wanted them to honour him. Fatphobic, racist, islamophobic, sexist, rape apologist etc. That dead man hated everyone,” a second said.
“i will not be watching the met gala bc why the fuck would they chose a karl lagerfeld theme?? that man was horribly fatphobic, racist, misogynistic, and completely discredited the me too movement. why, in this day and age, would he be an acceptable man to celebrate,” a third tweeted.
“Just a reminder that this year’s Met Gala is in celebration of the virulent fatphobe and racist Karl Lagerfeld. Furthermore, Chanel (the fashion house he oversaw until his death) was founded by an infamous Nazi sympathizer and informant,” someone wrote.
“Just a friendly reminder that Karl Lagerfeld was a fat phobic, misogynist, racist, anti-Semite and doesn’t deserve praise or celebration,” said another.
