A seven-year-old boy saved the life of his 22-month-old sister by jumping into their burning house.
Mother Nicole Davidson told WVLT that her 7-year-old son Eli rescued his younger sister from the fire.
The mother said that on December 8, 2020, she and her husband woke up in the middle of the night to find their house was on fire.
“Chris, my husband, grabbed the fire extinguisher trying to buy me time to get the kids, and I grabbed the boys because they were closest to the fire,” Nichole told WVLT.
“But flames in the living room prevented us from reaching our toddler’s bedroom,” she said.
According to the mother, somehow, they managed to grab their elder foster son, Eli, and younger 2-year-old, Elijah. However, they couldn’t pick up their youngest child – the 22-month-old daughter who was sleeping in the room as the flames blocked the entrance.
“We went outside to get to her from the window, but there was nothing for me to stand on to reach up there,” father Chris Davidson told CNN.
He said he broke the room’s window where she was sleeping but couldn’t climb up by himself.
Davidson told the outlet that Eli was their foster son, and he’d been living with the Davidsons for almost a year.
“For a moment, I thought we’d lose her as the flames got so big, they were about to take over the whole house, and everything was going to collapse.”
“We were so worried; my wife was crying, I was panicking. Then our son, the 7-year-old Eli, said he wanted to help. So, I picked him up, and he went through the window and was able to grab her little sister from her crib,” he said.
Speaking with CNN, the seven-year-old said,
“Dad busted the window, and then I said, ‘I can’t do it,’ like two times, and then I said, ‘I got her dad,'” said Eli.
“And when we went down there, I said I was scared, but I didn’t want my sister to die.” He added.
So, Chris lifted him, and the boy climbed inside the room. He grabbed his sister, who was still asleep and ran back to the window where Chris was waiting to help him get safely to the ground.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Eli. He did something a grown man wouldn’t do.”
After getting hold of their daughter, Nichole and Chris took their kids and left the house.
Soon the firefighters arrived, but the house was completely burnt by that time.
“We lost everything that we have ever had. Our entire lives were in that home. Our three cars were also damaged in the fire.” Said Chris.
“It’s devastating. We have nothing,” he continued. “You have never been as humble as you are when you don’t have anything left in your possession, not even a single shirt or a handkerchief.”
The couple said they would build everything from scratch, but they didn’t have to do it all by themselves. Chris launched a GoFundMe to raise funds for his family. The original goal was to collect $5000; however, the family managed to raise $369,299.
