10 Signs Your “Friend” Isn’t Really Your Friend At All

We all have friends, but not all friends are created equal. Some true friends are there for us through thick and thin. Others, however, are fake friends who only care about themselves and what they can get from us.

If you’re unsure if you have any fake friends, this article is for you. Here are ten signs that your friend might not be as real as you think they are.

Sign #1: They Only Call You When They Need Something

“A true friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.” – Elbert Hubbard

A real friend will want to spend time with you because they enjoy your company. They’ll contact you to see how you’re doing, even if they don’t need anything from you. On the other hand, a fake friend will only call you when they need a favor or feel lonely. They’ll use you to get what they want and then disappear again.

Sign #2: They’re Always Talking About Themselves

“A friend is someone who knows all your flaws and still loves you.” – George Burns

A real friend will be interested in hearing about your life, too. They’ll ask you about your work, family, and hobbies. They’ll want to know what’s going on in your world. On the other hand, fake friends will only talk about themselves and their problems. They won’t care about what’s going on in your life.

Sign #3: They Put You Down or Make Fun of You

“Fake friends are like shadows: always near you at your brightest moments, but nowhere to be found at your darkest hour.” – Unknown

A real friend will build you up and make you feel good about yourself. They’ll compliment you on your accomplishments and tell you how much they appreciate you. A fake friend, on the other hand, will tear you down and make you feel bad about yourself. They’ll make fun of your clothes, hair, or weight. They’ll always find something wrong with you.

Sign #4: They Gossip About Your Other Friends

“True friends are like diamonds – rare, valuable, and always in style.” – Nicole Richie

A real friend will keep your secrets and respect your privacy. They won’t gossip about you or your other friends behind your back. On the other hand, a fake friend will gossip about you and your other friends to anyone who will listen. They’ll spread rumors and lies about you to make themselves look better.

Sign #5: They’re Always Late or Cancel Plans at the Last Minute

“A true friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” – Walter Winchell

A real friend will make an effort to keep plans with you. They’ll let you know if they’re going to be late or if they need to cancel. A fake friend, on the other hand, will be flaky and unreliable. They’ll often be late for plans or cancel them at the last minute without giving you a reason.

Sign #6: They Don’t Support Your Dreams or Goals

“A real friend is someone who believes in you when you can’t believe in yourself.” – Mandy Hale

A real friend will cheer you on and help you achieve your goals. They’ll believe in you even when you don’t believe in yourself. On the other hand, a fake friend will discourage you and try to make you feel like you can’t do anything. They’ll tell you that you’re not good enough or that you’ll never succeed.

Sign #7: They’re Only Your Friend When It’s Convenient for Them

“True friends are not the ones who stay with you during the good times, but the ones who stay with you during the bad times.” – Unknown

A real friend will be there for you no matter what. They’ll be there for you when you’re happy and sad. They’ll be there for you when you’re successful and struggling. On the other hand, a fake friend will only be there for you when it’s convenient for them. They’ll only be there when they need something from you.

Sign #8: They’re Always Competing with You

“A friend is someone who helps you up when you’re down. A best friend is someone who laughs at you while you’re down.” – Unknown

A real friend will be happy about your success. They’ll celebrate your wins and cheer you on. A fake friend, on the other hand, will be jealous of your successes and try to sabotage you. They’ll try to make you feel bad about yourself and doubt your abilities.

Sign #9: They’re Always Trying to Change You

“A real friend is someone who accepts you for who you are.” – George Eliot

A real friend will love you for who you are and your flaws. They won’t try to change you into someone you’re not. A fake friend, on the other hand, will always try to change you. They’ll tell you you must lose weight, change your hair, or dress differently. They’ll never be happy with who you are.

Sign #10: You Feel Bad About Yourself After Spending Time With Them

“If you can’t be yourself around someone, they’re not your friend.” – Mandy Hale

Feeling bad about yourself after spending time with someone is a sign that they’re not a good friend to you. A real friend will make you feel good about yourself. They’ll make you laugh, support you, and always be there for you. A fake friend, on the other hand, will make you feel bad about yourself. They’ll put you down, make you feel insecure, and always be there to judge you.

If you notice any of these signs in your friendships, talking to your friend about it is important. If they’re a real friend, they’ll be willing to listen to your concerns and make changes. But if they’re a fake friend, they’ll probably deny everything and make you feel like you’re the problem.

In that case, it might be time to end the friendship. It can be hard to let go of a friend, but it’s important to surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself. You deserve to have real friends in your life.

Here are some additional tips for identifying fake friends:

  • Please consider how they treat you when you’re not around others. Do they still act like your friend or treat you differently?
  • Pay attention to how they talk about other people behind their backs. If they’re willing to talk about other people badly, they’re probably willing to talk about you badly, too.
  • Trust your gut instinct. You’re probably right if you feel that someone isn’t a good friend.

Remember, you deserve to have real friends in your life. Don’t waste your time on fake friends.

  1. This signs really helps me a lot and now i know that I should distance my self to other people when I’m feeling uncomfortable and feeling not belong to the group and yes i guess I’d prefer to be alone though i always did as being alone, so i think i continue what I’m doing because i guess it’s correct due to this given signs.
