Tony Bennett, Iconic Crooner of the American Songbook, Dead at 96

The legendary American singer passed away on Friday, July 21, at the age of 96 just two weeks before his 97th birthday.

The iconic singing legend Anthony Dominick Benedetto, professionally known as Tony Bennett, collaborated with everyone in his career, from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga. His friend, Frank Sinatra, once called him the ‘greatest popular singer’ in the world.

Bennett’s publicist released a statement to The New York Post – the artist’s cause of death has not been revealed yet, although he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.

Following his passing, tributes have been shared online by numerous big names worldwide, including his peers and fellow artists.

“Tony Bennett was an iconic songwriter and entertainer who charmed generations of fans. He was also a good man—Michelle and I will always be honored that he performed at my inauguration. We’re thinking of his wife Susan, his kids, and everyone who is missing him today,” ex-president Barack Obama wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, fellow music legend Billy Joel shared three pictures of himself with Tony and wrote, “Tony Bennett was the one of the most important interpreters of American popular song during the mid to late 20th century.”

“He championed songwriters who might otherwise have remained unknown to many millions of music fans. His was a unique voice that made the transition from the era of Jazz into the age of Pop,” Joel added in a second tweet.

“I will always be grateful for his outstanding contribution to the art of contemporary music. He was a joy to work with. His energy and enthusiasm for the material he was performing was infectious. He was also one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever known,” he concluded.

Singer Mariah Carey also shared two snaps with the Rags to Riches artist and wrote,

“Rest in Peace Tony Bennett. It was such an honor to work with one of the world’s most beloved, respected and legendary singers of the past century. We will miss you.”

“You will be forever missed, Tony. Your legacy will live on forever, not just for your music, but for your painting and for your heart. I adore you. May you rest easy,” said Brooke Shields.

Canadian singer Michael Buble also shared a lengthy heartfelt message on his Twitter and paid tribute to one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

“Tony Bennett is one of the greatest vocalists, storytellers and interpreters of all time. To say he was an important part of who I became is an understatement,” he penned.

“My grandpa was constantly playing Tony Bennett records when I was growing up, and it was the honour of a lifetime to learn from him. Having my hero take me under his wing was one of the greatest moments of my life and my career. How did I get so lucky to kneel at the feet of the master for 2 decades?” the Sway singer added.

“Tony, I’ll never stop learning from you, and I promise you I’ll do my best to keep the music we cherish alive. I love you.”

In 2021, Bennett shared with fans that he had been quietly battling Alzheimer’s since 2016. Despite his health condition, the Love for Sale singer kept performing and even released a new album in collaboration with Lady Gaga.
