A viral TikTok video has sparked a massive debate on social media about parents giving their kids names that will fit them at all ages.
The original video was posted by Nikki Ruble, a mum who said she gave her kids adult names and not baby names because they are going to be adults for most of their lives.
Over 7.5 million people on TikTok viewed Nikki’s video, and while many of her followers agreed with her approach, many others didn’t.
Now, another mum, Ruby Villarreal, has taken to the video-sharing platform and shared her opinion on Ruble’s video and said she didn’t name her kids with baby names so they won’t outgrow their names as adults.
“This is the exact reason on why I named my daughter what I named her,” the mum of two said in her TikTok clip.
Agreeing with Nikki, Ruby added, “The whole concept when I was trying to look for a name and choose a name for her, I did not want her to outgrow her name. I wanted the name to fit her as a baby, as a toddler, as a child and into adulthood so I really am happy with what I ended up with naming her and it just fits her so well.”
She uploaded her video with a caption that read, “love having nicknames as they are younger, and it doesn’t mean they will prefer it over their name as they get older,” and asked for people’s opinions.
The clip amassed over 12 million views on TikTok, and thousands of parents shared their views on the two videos.
“Names age with the generation. When our grandparents were naming their kids Brenda and Steven, those were baby names, not old people names,” one wrote.
“The world is changing so much. By the time our babies are adults all names are going to be so different & unique it won’t matter,” another parent commented.
“Names can garner respect or ridicule in adulthood. The wrong name can be devastating to an adults success. Choose wisely,” a third added.
“Took me a while to pick a name because of this plus thinking if they could get picked on because of it,” wrote another.
“Omg facts. Literally like some parents don’t think about how they’re going to have these names as adults,” another said.
After the video went viral, Ruby, a blogger and makeup artist, uploaded a second video and revealed that she named her daughter Karla Esmerelda and her son Deluca.
“I just really liked how simple, how bold, and strong that the name by itself just really kind of is. Doing some research names with the letter K tend to be like very bold and powerful names, so I really wanted it with a K and not with a C,” she said in the follow-up video.
