If you are truly in love with a person, then you have to be able to give that person space to grow. You should never be the one who holds them back from being who they have to be just because you’re afraid that you might end up losing them. You shouldn’t be attaching yourselves at the hip in your relationship. You don’t get to choose where they get to live or how they want to conduct their lives. You should not feel so entitled that you actually convince them to give up on their biggest hopes and dreams just because they don’t coincide with your own.
You do not have the right to place your own personal goals and expectations above those of your partner’s in the relationship. You should act like a team. You should always have each other’s backs. You should both always be making an effort to care about each other’s needs than you care about your own. That is the TRUE testament of love. That is what it means to be in a real and committed relationship with one another. This is what it REALLY means to be in love.
If you are in love with a person, you need to be able to make some sacrifices for one another. If you are put in a position wherein you have to uproot your own life so that you can give them a chance to pursue their dreams elsewhere, then you both have to sit down and discuss your options. You just don’t automatically turn them down without even giving things some thought.
You don’t just laugh at their face and dismiss their dreams just because moving would serve as an inconvenience for you. Love isn’t always going to be convenient. Love isn’t always going to be easy. And love isn’t something that is going to be immune to change. You don’t get to stay the same way the rest of your life just because it’s what is comfortable for you. Love isn’t always going to be comfortable. And if you want to keep love in your life, then you have to start getting used to putting yourself in positions of discomfort.
If you are truly in love with a person, then you have no right to be depriving them of the opportunities that they truly deserve. You do not get to dismiss your partner when they try to open up to you about everything that they aspire to become in this life. You do not get to laugh at your partner just because you can’t really relate to your partner’s goals and dreams. You should never discourage your partner from talking about wanting to take risks; from talking about trying new things in life. You do not have the right to tell your partner to quit even before they’ve taken their first step. You should always make your partner feel like you are supportive of them and that you are receptive of their ideas.
If you are truly in love with a person, you have to decide to put your faith in them. You have to believe in them. You have to trust that they are going to do great things. You have to just believe that they are going to go far in this life. And you have to constantly remind them that they do have what it takes to be great. You have to be able to dispel whatever insecurities and vulnerabilities they might have. You have to make them believe that they should never shy away from the spotlight. You have to make them feel like they shouldn’t be ashamed of going out and grabbing what they want out of life.
If you are truly in love with someone, then you have to always be their number one fan. You always have to serve as their cheerleader in life. You always have to be their most ardent supporters. When they are feeling weak and dark, you have to convince them that there are so many things in their life that are worth being proud of. You have to be able to make them see the light in the darkness of their own lives.
If you are truly in love with someone, then you have to be able to push them to grow and become a better human being. Sure, you can have a few insecurities here and there. You might think that your partner will wake up one day and decide that they’re too good for you. But you shouldn’t let that affect you. You shouldn’t let that fear keep you from encouraging them to be better people. You should always be a better class of human being because of your relationship. And that can only happen when you support and push one another.
