The chances of giving birth to twins have increased up to 72 percent in recent years, but still, it’s pretty rare. Nearly 33 babies out of 1,000 are twins.
And approximately every three out of 1000 babies are identical twins, which is also not very common.
A woman in Florida, Savannah Combs, who’s only 23 years old, found out she was pregnant with twins. But then the doctor told her something that made her upset. She was told that her babies that were yet to be born had Down syndrome.
It was very emotional news for Savannah and her husband, Justin Ackerman, who was away at some Bootcamp when her wife told her about the doctor’s revelation.
According to Savannah, she was worried because she knew that people would judge her babies because of their unusual condition.
But then she told herself that it doesn’t happen to everybody, which makes her babies “incredibly precious.”
“It’s scarce what they have, but they’ve been my little gems,” she told News4JAX.
Savannah shared her post-pregnancy journey with her daughters Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman on TikTok, where they have gained an enormous following.
In one of her videos, Savannah shared that she was told multiple times to abort her babies because they would not make it. But she didn’t listen to anyone. She said she decided to keep them because they were her own.
”Every [prenatal] appointment they were alive was a blessing to me,” she said.
Savannah was only 29 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to the hospital and delivered her daughters. They were born on May 12, 2021.
The identical twins arrived two months before their due date, so they were kept in the NICU for several weeks before they came home.
“They’re called mono di twins; they had their own sacs but shared the same placenta, meaning they would be identical,” she explained in a Tiktok video.
“Mo di twins as it is, it’s like very rare. And then you throw Down syndrome on top of it, and it’s like one in 2 million.”
Savannah said that despite their rare condition, she does not treat them as if they were “special kids.”
“They have feelings. They have a beating heart. They know how to talk. They know how to do things you do. They will get there,”
“As I said, it may be a step behind, but they’re going to do it. I’ve learned these kids are feisty little things and happy little things.”
Savannah shares adorable updates of her baby girls on her TikTok account.
“I’m going to let them know that they’re just like us, and they’re going to get there as long as they put their minds to it.”
She shared on her Tiktok that sometimes people give insensitive comments, but she ignores such remarks.
A Facebook user commented something on her post,
“I wouldn’t want those babies; if mine came out like that, they would be straight up for adoption.”
“I said, good thing they weren’t born to you and were born to me. God knew what he was doing by giving these babies to the right parents who would love them regardless.”
