A woman with a rare skin condition has been subjected to online and real-life criticism over her appearance. Still, despite all the negativity, she remained positive and embraced her reality with a smile on her face.
Karine de Souza is a 29-year-old woman from Fortaleza, Brazil, who was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum at the age of three.
Her skin condition requires de Souza to put on SPF100 Sunscreen on her whole body every two hours while she sits inside her home with her curtains closed.
The doctors have warned Karine that every time her skin gets exposed to sunlight, the UV rays will increase the chances of skin cancer as the Brazilian native is deficient in the DNA system that repairs skin damage.
However, despite her skin condition and all the hardships attached to it, Karine, who is at a constant risk of Melanoma, says she wants to live her life to the fullest.
“I am the target of a lot of glances, a lot of people staring at me, some of them distance themselves,” she told Truly.
De Souza, who has got done over 130 surgical operations to remove lesions caused by the sun, said whenever she goes out of her house, people look at her in absolute disgust and say mean things to her face.
Karine is only allowed to step out of her house at night, on rainy days, or when she has a doctor’s appointment, too carefully because she cannot be exposed to sunlight for a minute.
Although she thought she would never be able to find love in her life, Karine met the man of her dreams some three years ago through social media.
The couple started talking online, and her now-husband, Edmilson, really liked her strength and was impressed by her story.
The pair started dating and often shared photos together on their social media, which made many people curious about the legitimacy of their relationship.
“We have already read many offensive comments calling me a monster, deformed, a zombie,” she said.
After their marriage, Edmilson owned Karine’s three children, whom she shared from her previous relationship. The couple lives a happy life and now have welcomed a daughter together.
Karine and Edmilson’s daughter was born in January 2023, and she is six months old now.
“ZAYA my miracle, my princess welcome, mommy, daddy and your siblings love you very much. You came to bring us blessing and a lot of joy, you are my precious light,” she wrote on Instagram.
