World’s Oldest Person Who Lived to 117 Shared the One Food She Ate Daily That Helped Her Live So Long

Maria Branyas Morera, who lived in the US and Spain, passed away on August 19 at the age of 117. According to Guinness World Records, she was one of the oldest people ever, ranking eighth in recorded history.

She spent the last 20 years of her life in a nursing home in Catalonia, Spain. She left behind two of her children, 11 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

After Lucile Randon, a 118-year-old French nun, passed away in 2023, Morera became the world’s oldest living person. She had previously shared that eating one particular food daily helped her live a long life.

Maria was born in the US but moved back to Spain with her family in 1915 during World War I. Later in life, she married Dr. Joan Moret, and they had three children. Her eldest son, August, passed away at the age of 86.

Throughout her long life, Maria experienced many significant historical events. She lived through both World Wars, the Spanish Civil War, and the Spanish Flu pandemic, and even witnessed the COVID-19 outbreak in her final years.

Although Maria had trouble with hearing and movement in her later years, she stayed mentally sharp and celebrated her 117th birthday earlier this year.

So, what kept her going for so long? Maria revealed her secret to a long life a couple of years ago on social media, sharing the habits that she believed helped her live such a long and fulfilling life.

“I think longevity is also about being lucky. Luck and good genetics,” she wrote on X in December 2022.

“Many people ask me what diet I follow to live [for] so many years. I have always eaten little, but everything, and I have never followed any regime. I have not suffered from any illness or been through an operating room.”

According to Maria, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle were very important. She thought being close to family and friends, spending time in nature, staying calm, not worrying or regretting things, having a positive outlook, and keeping away from negative people were all crucial for a long and happy life.

“In an age where diets and miraculous foods for well-being and health are constantly emerging, it is necessary to rescue yogurt, a lifelong food with an infinite number of positive properties for the body.”

Maria mentioned a Bulgarian study that found eating yogurt regularly can help people live longer. She also pointed out that, according to Persian tradition, the long life of Abraham was linked to his yogurt consumption.

She explained that she enjoys La Fageda yogurt every day, describing it as a “natural, tasty, creamy yogurt” with a unique flavor that brings feelings of dignity, self-esteem, confidence, and responsibility.

“If you delve into its history, you will discover that it is the most unique yogurt that exists for its provenance, purpose, commitment, and values,” she said at that time.

“For 20 years, it has been my ‘heavenly manna’. The best yogurt in the world. It gives life, it is life.”
