A homeless man found a $10,000 paycheck and returned it to the owner because he wanted to do the right thing.
According to the Daily Mail, Elmer Alvarez found the check on one street in New Haven, Connecticut, and decided to contact the owner, realtor Dr. Roberta Hoskie.
Dr. Hoskie didn’t even know that she had lost at a busy intersection until Alvarez showed up at his door and returned her paycheck. She became impressed with his honesty and decided to find her a good place to live.
Dr. Roberta, a successful businesswoman, was so moved by Elmer’s honesty that she also arranged a job interview for him with one of his business partners.
Even then, the realtor thought it wasn’t enough, so she enrolled him in her real estate school, where he will learn how to proceed in this field and will eventually start working.
The realtor then invited Alvarez to meet her at the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and paid a heartwarming tribute to him.
Speaking to Fox News 61, Dr. Hoskie said that she was also homeless at one point in her life, so she knows the struggle, and when Alvarez proved his honesty and good character, she made up her mind to help him get his life on track.
“He has absolutely no idea what’s about to happen,” said Dr. Roberta on his Live Facebook stream.
Then she told Elmer that he was no longer a homeless man, “You don’t have to worry about being in the cold. We have housing for you.”
Upon listening to this, the poor man teared up and said, “Thank God!”
Then Roberta handed him an appreciation certificate for his honesty and good deed and said she was very thankful to him for doing the right thing.
“There are always angels out here in heaven and earth,” said Elmer.
When the news outlet asked Elmer about his good deed and why he chose to return the paycheck despite being needy, he answered,
“Because it was the right thing to do. Honestly, I give it from the bottom of my heart, and I expect nothing back in return.”
According to CBS News, Alvarez said he didn’t think about keeping the money for himself for once.
“The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘I got to look for this person.’” He said.
“It never crossed my mind because I made a decision to turn my life over. I’ve been clean for three years,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hoskie said that she couldn’t believe someone would do such a thing in today’s world, especially when they need the money for themselves.
“It shattered all the stereotypes. He could have kept the money and could have moved on with his life after getting a new place for himself, but he chose to do the right thing instead. Not many people do that. And I really appreciate his honesty,” she said.
