Carrie-Anne Moss Speaks Up About How Age Changes People’s Perceptions

The Matrix franchise made a spectacular comeback in 2021 after almost 20 years with The Matrix Resurrections. Audiences loved the chemistry between Neo & Trinity, played by Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss, as they leaped into action and stayed true to the franchise’s roots.

Carrie-Anne Moss, currently 53, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the massive role an actress’ age plays in the movie industry. She went from being one of the most iconic actresses in the 20s to recently being offered a grandmother’s role at 40.

“I had heard that at 40 everything changed,”

Then she went on about receiving a grandmother’s role on her 40th birthday:

“I didn’t believe in that because I don’t believe in just jumping on a thought system that I don’t really align with. But literally the day after my 40th birthday, I was reading a script that had come to me and I was talking to my manager about it. She was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, it’s not that role, it’s the grandmother. I may be exaggerating a bit, but it happened overnight. I went from being a girl to the mother to beyond the mother.”

Age is a natural part of life, and everyone goes through it, but movie stars have to face it in a more “brutal” way, as noted by Moss.

“You don’t feel like you’ve aged much and suddenly you’re seeing yourself onscreen,”

When we look at celebrities, we think of their lives as being “perfect” or “flawless” – while reality says otherwise. They’re human; they have stresses and anxieties. Being on the big screen comes with a lot of expectations and preconceived societal notions that one has to abide by to succeed in the industry.

While discussing the issue of the pressures of the industry, Moss added:

“I would look at these French and European actresses and they just had something about them that felt so confident in their own skin. I couldn’t wait to be that. I strive for that. It’s not easy being in this business. There’s a lot of external pressure.”

But if Carry-Anne Moss proved anything in The Matrix Resurrections, it is that she still got it! As soon as she appeared, the Matrix-fan in me was filled with joy and happiness to see the same Trinity I saw ages ago! Her bike sequence was phenomenal, and she was in incredible form.

Her role in The Matrix Resurrections only solidifies that age is just a number. Celebrities should be treated according to how they act and carry their characters onscreen.

It’s sad how the world works and how glamour controls most of our lives and decisions – but what matters more is how true queens like Carry-Anne Moss still face those problems head-on and give their best performance.

We wish Moss an incredible and successful journey ahead. Her talent as an actress speaks for itself and doesn’t need justifications.

  1. She was absolutely amazing as always or even better than before feeling she had something to prove. I can’t wait for the next Matrix! Hopefully it’s not far away!
