A gay couple from Pennsylvania adopted six children from the foster care system.
The Pittsburgh dads decided to adopt six siblings from foster care to make sure they weren’t separated from each other.
Steve Anderson-McLean and Rob Anderson-McLean got together nearly twenty years ago, and since then, they have been living together. The two legally married each other in 2013.
In 2018 they decided to adopt children, and when they learned about the six siblings; their parents abandoned them to spend their lives in the foster system, they decided they wanted all of them.
“We saw their picture and fell in love,” said Rob. “So many sibling groups are broken up because people just want to adopt the younger children. Steve and I knew these guys needed to be together.”
According to Today, in July 2018, the couple officially took guardianship of Carlos, 14, Guadalupe, 13, Maria, 12, Selena, 10, Nasa, 9, and Max, 7.
“After the first week they were asking if they could stay forever,” Steve, 48, told the outlet. “We took them to the park and to the zoo. We played in the yard.”
“That was all new to them, having fun was new to them.” He added.
While talking to the outlet, dad Steve explained that the kids were delighted when they got to know that Steve and his partner were adopting them.
“They had been let down by adults so many times in their life, and were nervous it wasn’t going to happen. They were so relieved when we brought them home and told them it’s their home too.”
The dads said that when they first brought them home, they worried about the eldest sibling, Carlos, who was 14 then. They thought since he was a teenager, he might face some issues adjusting to his new life with same-gender parents.
“We thought with Carlos being a teen, he might have a hard time, but it has not bothered him one bit,” Said Steve.
“The other night, Max, our 7-year-old, looks at me and goes, ‘I’m adopted,’ so I nodded and said, ‘You can’t get unadopted, right?’ And I had to reassure him that he will always be our son.”
The now-big happy family also spoke to Good Morning America and explained their feelings about having each other.
“The judge asked, ‘Do you understand at this point forward they are your children? They are just as much as your biological children.’”
“Obviously, we knew that, but when I looked up and saw all those eyes, it was very emotional,” Steve told the outlet.
“We never imagined we’d be lucky enough or blessed enough to have six.”
“I’d say our kids have brought a great kind of crazy to our lives. It’s heartwarming and so exciting to see how they connect with us and our extended family and friends,” added Rob.
The couple already has two sons, Parker, 25, and Noah, 26. They told GMA that they share the boys from their previous marriages.
