After Shonda Rhymes, Mia Farrow, Josh Gad, Shaun King, Ken Olin, Rob Reiner, and Amy Siskind, Gigi Hadid becomes the latest celebrity to quit Twitter after ‘the Elon Musk takeover.’
On Saturday, November 5, the 27-year-old supermodel took to her Instagram account and informed her 76 million followers that she deactivated her Twitter account because of the platform’s new leadership.
“I deactivated my Twitter account today,” Gigi wrote on her Instagram Story.
“For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and it’s not a place I want to be a part of,” she added.
“Only sorry to the fans who I’ve loved connecting with for a decade via Twitter, but I can’t say it’s a safe place for anyone, not a social platform that will do more good than harm,” she concluded.
The founder, creator, and director of her clothing line, ‘Guest in Residence’ wrote this caption alongside the post of Shannon Raj Singh, an American attorney specialized in international criminal law, atrocity prevention, and the intersection of tech and human rights.
In her now-viral Tweet, Singh revealed that the entire Human Rights team had been cut from the company, including herself. She further said that she’s proud of her contributions to protecting the ones at risk in times of need.
“Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company. I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises including Ethiopia,” her Tweet read.
According to the Daily Mail, “Hadid’s decision comes after Bot Sentinel, a data firm, found that Twitter may have lost over a million users since Musk bought the tech company for $44 billion, indicating that some users have been suspended by the company and others may have deactivated out of protest.”
The tech mogul’s Twitter takeover is not sitting well with the majority, and he’s constantly facing backlash for nearly all the steps he took after becoming the ‘Twitter chief.’
From entering the Twitter headquarters with a sink to announcing plans to charge for blue tick verification, Elon is not going easy on anyone!
Following his acquisition, Musk’s ex-girlfriend, Amber Heard, also left Twitter.
Reportedly, Amber’s account vanished from the microblogging app only a few days after Elon announced that he had bought Twitter.
Many people and multiple media outlets noticed on Thursday, November 3, that Amber’s official account, @realamberheard, no longer exists on the platform. It is still being determined if Amber herself has deleted the account or if it is Elon’s doing.
Elon and Amber started dating in April 2017 after her official split from her former husband, Johnny Depp.
According to People Magazine, “The former couple was first spotted out together several times throughout 2016, sparking romance rumors, and later went official with their relationship in April 2017.”
After four months of relationship, the couple broke up in August 2017, reconciled a few months later, and eventually called it quit in 2018.
