Jack Antonoff Says He’ll Keep Singing Love Songs After Split

Jack Antonoff is not taking the love songs off the setlist. In an interview with The Guardian published October 25, the Bleachers frontman said he will keep performing songs inspired by Margaret Qualley, three months after the pair split. His reasoning was blunt. According to E! Online, he told the paper: “I have no shame about the things I’ve said.”

What Jack Antonoff Said About His Love Songs

Antonoff admitted he thought about cutting them. Some of the songs were written recently, and he told The Guardian he sat with the question for a long time. He pictured a version of the tour with a changed setlist. His gut, he said, came back with a unanimous answer: no.

Antonoff, 42, framed it as a promise. He described a deal with his audience, where he tells them honestly how he feels and accepts that he might have to stand behind those words forever. He said he refuses to look in the mirror and pretend the good times did not exist. Standing onstage and singing about them makes that impossible.

He went further. As The Blast reported, he put it this way: “I would rather live through something publicly than even escape it privately.”

Antonoff also described what happens in the room. A crowd that knows what a song was about, knows how it must feel for him now, and holds all of it at once. He called the experience beautiful.

A Marriage Set to Music

Antonoff and Qualley started dating in 2021 and married in August 2023, according to The Blast. Bad timing made their split harder than most. His new album, Everyone for Ten Minutes, arrived only weeks before news of the breakup broke in July. Songs on it celebrate the marriage. The music video for “You and Forever” features the two of them together.

So the record promoting his tour is, in part, a record about a relationship that has ended.

Qualley’s side spoke in July. A rep for the 32-year-old actress confirmed the breakup to E! News after nearly three years of marriage and shut down what the rep called untrue stories about the reason. The rep said there were no trust issues and no infidelity, and that the two still have deep love and care for one another. Neither has said publicly why the marriage ended.

Most people who break up get to put the photos in a drawer. Antonoff’s photos are a tracklist, and he has decided to keep them on the wall.

Plenty of exes rewrite the story after the fact. The relationship becomes a mistake, the happy years become a warning sign somebody missed. It is a way of making the ending feel less like a loss. Antonoff is refusing that move in public, which is the hardest place to refuse it. He is saying the songs were true when he wrote them and they stay true now, even though the marriage is over.

That stance fits the rep’s statement from Qualley’s camp, too. No villain, no betrayal, care on both sides. Two people can mean every word of a love song and still not stay married. Keeping the song does not mean wanting the marriage back. It means not lying about what it was.

Jack Antonoff on Tour After the Split

The Blast described his songwriting as rooted in real experience, and pointed out he has spent years turning hard emotions into music listeners use for their own lives. This tour is the most exposed version of that so far. He wrote happy songs about a living marriage and is now singing them as a man who is no longer in it.

E! Online noted that his outlook on the songs was not always this settled in the early weeks after the split. By late October, the answer was firm. The setlist stays.

Jack Antonoff has not said whether he is writing about the breakup itself. Qualley has not commented on the interview.
