We live in a world where loneliness and sorrow are just a turn away. But there are still decent, good human beings among us who make it better.
Some stories are so incredible and beautiful; they’re worth sharing. This one comes from 2017 – where a 22-year-old woman asked an 86 year old widower to a dinner date for Christmas so that he’s not alone.
Ellie Walker, 22, works at a Sainsbury supermarket in the UK. She has a heart of gold. Edwin Holmes is an 86 year old man who worked as a painter and a decorator.
He was happily married for 45 years until his wife passed away in 2006. He has a daughter who moved to Australia, so meeting her often was more than a task for this elderly man.
Ellie’s supermarket was near where Edwin lived. Edwin was a regular customer of Ellie’s, and they got to know each other through those small interactions. Because she knew that Edwin would be alone on Christmas, without family and friends, she decided to ask him out for dinner. Edwin accepted the kind offer and even wore his best suit to the occasion!
Ellie also received a bouquet from Edwin, which made her tear up. It’s the thought that counts, and when human beings simply care for one another, it’s always emotional and rare to see.
When speaking with The Sun about this, Ellie said:
“He said it was his first ‘date’ in 55 years and he was as nervous as a schoolboy.
“It made me cry because I could see how much it meant to him. For me it’s the most important part of my job to speak with customers and see how their day is going.”
Ellie went on to further explain how they’re still good friends and meet often. She trusts him and sees a grandfather figure in him.
“He is without a shadow of a doubt my favourite customer.
“He is the cutest man and so chatty. I thought if it was my granddad and he was alone I would want someone to talk to him.
“I see him regularly now and we meet for coffee. It’s nice to be able to chat with him.”
Edwin also spoke about the special occasion, saying:
“The dinner made me very happy as it was unexpected and I had very pleasant company.”
“As for the suit, it was my first date for about 55 years, and I got the flowers because I wasn’t going to go empty handed.”
It always brings joy to our hearts when we see such memorable and incredible stories pop up worldwide. It gives us comfort knowing there are human beings who look after one another and take care of each other’s emotional well-being.
We hope the two are still friends and are in good health!
