A UK girl who lost her right eye to a grade D tumor when she was fourteen months old now got a pink prosthetic eye.
Daisy Passfield is an eight-year-old girl from Hertfordshire who was diagnosed with a tumor in her retina and, as a result, lost vision in her right eye.
‘The then tot had chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, but two months after chemotherapy, it began growing back, forcing doctors to remove her right eye completely.’ Daily Mail reported.
The brave little girl initially picked a blue prosthetic eye for herself but later changed her mind. Show wanted to get a pink one instead.
‘The confident schoolgirl surprised her family and doctors by asking to have a new eye in her favorite color – pink glitter.’
Now she’s so thrilled to show her new ‘superhero’ eye to her friends that it looks like a unicorn eye or more like a dragon’s.
“I feel happy because everyone can see my pink sparkly eye. I am so excited to show everyone at school my sparkly eye.”
“I think they will love it just like I do. Everyone I have spoken to has said how lovely it is.” Said Daisy.
Daisy’s mum, Alysia Passfield, shared that it was really hard for her to get a proper diagnosis for Daisy’s condition.
“I noticed from a photograph – she had a white glow in her eye, and her eye had a glaze on it.”
“The most common symptoms are a white glow in the eye or pupil in dim lighting or when a photo is taken using a flash and a squint.”
She further said, “Daisy was diagnosed with retinoblastoma – a rare and aggressive form of eye cancer that affects babies and young children, mainly under the age of six – in October 2015.”
“I knew there was something wrong. Obviously, I was upset and in a bit of a shock. Daisy was absolutely fine; she took it in her stride and has six rounds of chemotherapy to try to shrink the tumor.”
However, her tumor came back only two months after her chemotherapy. So, the doctors started ‘Intra-arterial chemotherapy – a newer procedure which is meant to shrink the tumor.’ Per Daily Mail.
‘Intra-arterial chemotherapy is a new method of delivering chemotherapy drugs directly to the eye rather than around the body.’
“By September 2016, we made the decision to remove her eye because the chemo that she had, had broken the tumor into different parts, and we didn’t want the tumor to spread.” Said Alysia.
The thirty-year-old mother said the doctors took almost four hours to finish the operation.
“After the operation, Daisy was given a blue eye matching her natural eye color.”
“Daisy has always been into sparkly things, make-up, and making herself look pretty.”
“We went to our appointment, I said to the woman about Daisy having a different colored eye and they said they can do that.”
Now Daisy lives a perfectly normal life and is happy with her pink prosthetic eye.
“She is one of the most confident people I have ever met. The only thing she can’t do is drive a combine harvester or fly a plane, but I don’t think we have to ever worry about that happening.” Said Alysia.
