Stories from and about Ukraine keep increasing as the situation keeps escalating by the minute. Today’s story is about a Ukrainian woman, Maria, who lives in Chicago with her fiance, David.

After situations began to worsen in Ukraine, Maria decided to marry the love of her life in their backyard and fly back to Poland – after which, she’ll cross the border and move to Ukraine in order to help out. And David isn’t staying back, either. He is applying for a passport to accompany his wife later on.

Last year, the couple got engaged and lived happily in their Oak Park home in Chicago. Their backyard wedding was modest, with around twenty people in attendance – all of their friends and family.

Maria’s friend, Pamela Chinchilla, said:

“People are running out of there and she is running in,”

While speaking about her decision of going to Ukraine, Maria said:

“I have to go,”

“I can’t do protests or fundraising or wave flags. We’ve done this since 2015, Ukrainians, and I just can’t do it anymore.”

Speaking about her supportive husband, David, she said:

“He knows how stubborn I am and knew he´d have no chance to convince me otherwise,”

Maria will reach Poland, where her friends reside. Then, she’ll start her journey to Ukraine. She spoke about her plans:

“There’s always a need for volunteers. I’m pretty strong, I’m not afraid of blood, I’m good under pressure.”

We salute this strong and dedicated woman for doing her part in order to help her people in need – by doing whatever she can. And David will join her soon, also! Best of luck to both of you lovely people!
