Nick Kyrgios ridiculed Sam Smith for using the term Fisherthem in a new interview.
Recently, the non-binary pop star appeared on BBC in The One Man Show with Ronan Keating and said they would enjoy being a fisherthem.
“You’re a big fan of fishing?” Ronan asked Sam.
“I do love fishing, yes. Yeah, I’d love to be a fisherthem!” they replied.
“What, like a fly fisherman?” Keating asked.
“I’d be any type of fisherthem,” said Sam repeating the term.
Watching the interview, the Aussie tennis boy and controversy magnet, Nick Kyrgios shared his reaction to Sam’s new term on his Instagram story,
“This is so cringe bro I can’t,” he wrote along with a laughing emoji.
Nick is not the first celebrity to mock Smith for their gender identity.
“Piers Morgan joined the debate by photoshopping his head onto Smith’s BRIT Awards outfit and writing, “Gender update: I’m now identifying as a complete berk.”
“Sir Bob Geldof also repeatedly misgendered Smith during a TV interview, causing viewers to take to Twitter to demand an apology,” per Daily Mail.
A few weeks ago, Noel Gallagher blasted Sam Smith in a foul-mouthed rant and called them a f***ing idiot.
Speaking about today’s pop scene on the Dutch radio station, Kink, the 55-year-old former Oasis star slammed Smith and labeled them as ‘uncool.’
“Music has become quite fractured, and chart music is dominated by pop. Pop music is alright if the pop stars are cool. Sadly the stars of today are f***ing idiots,” he said.
When The Heat of the Moment singer was asked who he was referring to as ‘uncool,’ he quickly replied, “Sam Smith.”
When asked why he chose Sam Smith, Gallagher seemingly ignored Sam’s they/them pronouns and said, “Look at him!”
Noel’s comments came after Sam faced backlash over their satanic performance at the Grammys and controversial music video.
Viewers slammed Smith for their raunchy music video and said it was highly inappropriate for children and adults.
The singer has been known for their longtime struggles with self-identity and self-acceptance. However, now it seems they have finally become comfortable in their own skin and conquered body dysmorphia.
The musician first came out as gay in 2014 and revealed that they were dating a man. However, the relationship ended on a terrible note, and Sam got their heart broken.
The breakup led them to write their hit song Stay With Me, which won them a Grammy award.
“I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me 4 Grammys!” they once said during their acceptance speech.
After a lot of self-reflection and struggle, Smith identified themself as queer in 2017 and said they felt just as much like a woman as they were a man.
“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much a woman as I am a man,” they told The Sunday Times.
The Dancing with a Stranger hitmaker changed their pronouns in 2019 and said they wanted to do it sooner however, they couldn’t do so because of the public.
During one of their interviews on Apple Music 1, Sam revealed that they had been harassed on the streets of England since coming out.
“I think all the only negatives in the struggle have been in my public life and my job. And just the amount of hate and s****ness that came my way was just exhausting,” they said.
“It was in the f****** news. Someone spat at me in the street. It’s crazy. What I find hard about it is it’s like, if that’s happening to me and I’m famous, I’m a pop star, can you imagine what other kids, like queer kids are feeling?”
They added, “And it’s just so sad that we’re in 2023, and it’s still happening. It’s exhausting and especially in England.”
Sam also said that they haven’t faced any negativity regarding their queer identity in their personal life.
“So we’ve got two sides, really. My personal life and then my public life. And in my personal life, there’s not one negative.”
