Erin Foster Shares Engagement Story That Inspired Proposal Scene

Erin Foster, the creator of Nobody Wants This, has revealed that the proposal at the center of season three is lifted almost directly from her own life. In an Instagram video posted October 28, she walked through how her husband, Simon Tikhman, proposed to her in 2019.

Fake wedding and all.

E! Online reported the details. Season three has Adam Brody’s Noah getting down on one knee for Kristen Bell’s Joanne. Erin says the scene follows her real engagement very closely.

How Erin Foster’s Engagement Inspired a TV Proposal

About a month before Simon proposed, the couple received an invitation to a wedding vow renewal. According to E! Online, it was supposedly from a work colleague of his. It came with an attire guide and a schedule for the entire weekend. Simon played it down. He even told Erin she did not need to come along.

Trick number one.

Simon invented the invitation himself. He built it to get her to Napa without a single suspicion. Telling her she could skip it is the detail that makes the plan work. Nobody plotting a proposal tells their girlfriend to stay home.

Erin Foster went anyway. She recalled in the video that the trip was calm and that Simon gave nothing away.

Her sister Sara Foster was secretly traveling too. She was carrying the engagement ring from New York.

The Romantic Details of the Proposal

Simon had flown up to Napa ahead of time to brief the staff. At check-in, the front desk handed the couple an envelope with their names on it. Staff ran through the weekend’s wedding activities, exactly as he had coached them to. Erin got dressed for a ceremony she believed belonged to strangers. At the venue, signs everywhere celebrated a couple called Carolyn and Chief renewing their vows.

Neither of them existed.

Both families were already on the property. Erin Foster put it plainly in the video: “our families are fully just hiding inside that big barn.”

Sara and the rest of the family watched from behind curtained windows as Simon dropped to one knee. Photos and videos Foster shared from the day show what came after, according to E! Online: celebrations and a big family dinner. E! Online also reported that commenters on the post loved the story, with one suggesting Simon deserved a writing credit on the episode.

What Simon Tikhman’s Napa Plan Gets Right

Simon Tikhman did not just pick a pretty spot. He built a fake weekend. He recruited a hotel staff. He coordinated a ring courier across the country and hid two families in a barn.

The scale is what everyone notices first.

Scale is not really what made it land, though. Every piece of the plan depended on knowing Erin well. He knew what would make her suspicious and removed it. Sara brought the ring for the proposal. He knew a family dinner afterward would matter as much as the question itself.

Big proposals often go wrong because they are staged for an audience. Simon’s had an audience, but it was hiding.

Everyone watching was someone who would be at the wedding anyway. And the person it was designed for had no idea any of it was happening until it was.

Six years on, Erin Foster has turned it into television. Taking her own engagement and handing it to two fictional characters says plenty about how she still sees that day. She did not need to invent a better version.

Foster has not said which details changed on the way to the screen. Season three of Nobody Wants This will show how close Noah and Joanne’s moment comes to the barn in Napa.
