The wife of the Titanic-bound submersible that went missing on Sunday is the descendent of the wealthy New York couple who went down with the ship in 1912.
Wendy Rush is the wife of the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush, that ran the Titan sub. He was one of the five men on board.
Wendy’s great-great-grandparents were on the mighty Titanic that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg around 111 years ago.
Isidor and Ida Straus were two of the wealthiest people on the historic ship – Isidor was retailing magnate and co-founder of the Macy’s department store.
The couple is famous for their bravery during the time of panic and chaos when the Titanic hit the iceberg and was about to perish in the mighty ocean – Mr. Straus refused to leave using a lifeboat, saying women and children were struggling for their lives.
His wife also refused to leave her husband, and they both went down with the ship standing arm in arm on the deck.
Their history on the historic ship was also shown in James Cameron’s 1997 movie, Titanic, in which a couple portraying Mr. and Mrs. Straus embraced on their bed as the ocean water started engulfing the ship.
According to The Mirror, “Ms. Rush was born Wendy Hollings Weil and reportedly married the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions back in 1986. She has also taken part in trips to the Titanic wreckage and is believed to be the company’s communications director.”
The revelation comes as the search operation was carried on in search of the missing vessel with five passengers on board.
The frantic international search entered a more desperate phase today as the oxygen supply on the missing tourist submersible dwindled.
The five passengers on board the Titan are out of oxygen now, and the U.S. Coast Guard estimated that they could have run out of air at 7:10 a.m. ET. The exact location of the submersible and the condition of the passengers remain unknown, even as the search intensifies with new ships joining the effort.
The search expanded yesterday after crews heard “underwater noises.” The search area is twice the size of Connecticut and 2.5 miles deep.
The people on board have been identified as Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions; British billionaire Hamish Harding; French dive expert Paul Henry Nargeolet; and prominent Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman.
It has been reported that the Titanic-bound submersible that went missing on Sunday with a crew of five men on board suffered a ‘catastrophic implosion,’ shattering pieces of the unfortunate vessel and killing everyone on board.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that a debris field on the ocean floor had been discovered in the search operation for the missing Titan submersible.
