For many mothers, the day that they give birth is the day that they discover their true purpose in life. However, that doesn’t mean that giving birth is a completely stress-free experience. In fact, the opposite is almost always true. Many mothers go through extreme levels of stress and pain that are sustained throughout the entire birthing period. A mother’s physical labor to bring a child into this world is almost unimaginable.
But imagine the added stress that this mother had to go through when she discovered that a nurse had mistakenly handed her a child that wasn’t her own.
An Unfortunate Mix-Up
Becky Martin’s story is an interesting one. She has had the unique experience of actually having her baby switched up with another baby at the hospital. But the even weirder part of this story is that it has happened to her twice!
In a TikTok video, Becky recalled her experience of breastfeeding her baby boy just after having given birth to him.
“With my first, they wheeled in a baby boy and they were like ‘we fed your baby for you’, and I was like ‘I’m breastfeeding’.”
Once the nurses had realized the mistake they had made, they apologized and admitted that it was probably the wrong baby. Imagine the repercussions had Becky not been breastfeeding her baby at that time.
She probably would have accepted the baby that the nurses were mistakenly going to give her. But, of course, this was just a one-time occurrence, and it wasn’t anything that Becky wanted to make a big deal out of.
It Happened Twice
This kind of baby mix-up happening once is already alarming enough. But imagine the odds of this kind of thing happening twice. It would really make you question whether kids are handed off to the right parents or not.
“With my second, they wheeled in a baby girl and were like ‘here’s your daughter’.” We were like ‘she’s already in the room with us’.”
After the second time this happened to her, Becky was dubious.
“Once was an accident but twice was a pattern.”
That’s why when Becky was pregnant with her third child, she made it a point to never let her baby out of her sight. Even when the nurses wanted to take the baby away for testing, Becky was adamant about always being around.
“Of course, they fought us on it. The charge nurse came in and said [they] had to take that baby out to do testing. I said… Well, you can either do it in my room or I’ll accompany you to the lab, or we’ll do it or we’ll do it at his first doctor’s appointment.”
The TikTok video that was posted regarding Becky’s story has since amassed more than three million views. Many commenters have expressed their concerns over whether they were given the wrong kids during their time at the hospital.
