Birthmarks have always been associated with wisdom, and they are indeed a fun token in most cases to be born with. But, sometimes, these little marks are not so little.
Nicole Hall gave birth to a normal baby girl, Winry, almost 13 months ago; however, not everything was ordinary about her, and something was different.
The little girl had a sizable birthmark on the right side of her face that completely alarmed her parents.
While recollecting when they first saw her mark, Nicole said they became distraught and concerned for her daughter’s safety. Although she was born happy and healthy, she had something on her face that was quite unusual, and they had never seen something like that before.
“The first time I saw her, I thought it was a bruise,” Nicole told Good Morning America. “then slowly, it became apparent to my husband that it was not a bruise. Then I thought maybe it was a mole.”
”My husband and I became concerned, and we were extremely confused because we did not know what it was or if we could do something about it,” she added.
“However, the doctors assured us that we should not worry much. They told us that it is a condition called Congenital Melanocytic Nevi, or CMN.”
Doctors stated that their baby girl had an extremely rare birthmark, and its chance of occurring is around 1 in 50,000 births, and there is no chance of it being diagnosed before the baby is born.
“It’s estimated to occur in around 1 in 50,000 births and is mostly aesthetic, carrying the same concerns as any mole or nevi would.” The doctors told the couple.
While talking to the Bright Side, Nicole revealed that after having multiple discussions with the doctors, they became somewhat relieved and that their only concern was to keep their daughter healthy. “We just want her to live a normal life, like other children,” she said.
“Her health and happiness are our major priority. We have to monitor her with sunscreen. I’m cautious with hats and that sort of thing,” the mom said. “I know our dermatologist will probably be our best friend growing up.”
The couple had an elder son named Asher, who’s completely healthy and was born without any birthmark whatsoever. She shared that her son Asher is quite close to his baby sister and likes spending time with her. “He is accommodating and loving,” Nicole said.
According to the mother, Asher behaves completely normal around Winry, and he doesn’t even consider her birthmark as something unusually ‘different.’
“However, sadly, the same cannot be said about other people. Ever since I shared the story online through Instagram and TikTok, I have also received some insensitive comments from different people,” she said. “Sometimes, when we go out with Winry, people would stare at her, making us uncomfortable.”
“But there are many kind people as well. I have received more nice comments than insensitive ones, so I want to focus on the positive. Thousands of people have extended their love and support to Winry and our family, so I am not complaining.” Said Nicole.
The parents are trying their best to stay positive, but they are still concerned about how other children would treat her when she grows up and starts attending school.
