She doesn’t care!
Simone Biles has hit out at people criticizing how she wore her hair at her courthouse wedding with Jonathan Owens.
The Olympic gymnast wed Houston Texans player Jonathan Owens in an intimate courthouse ceremony on Saturday, April 21, 2023.
“I do [heart emoji] officially owens [heart emoji]” she wrote alongside a series of photos from the ceremony.
According to Daily Mail, “The gymnast, 26, and the football star, 27, officially became husband and wife on Saturday, exchanging their vows during an intimate ceremony held at a Texas courthouse while surrounded by their close friends and family.”
“The Olympic gold medalist donned a stunning, white ruffled gown for the wedding – and she revealed via Instagram afterwards that she picked out her ensemble just days before and ordered it online rather than going to see it in person.”
Although Simone received praise for her affordable wedding outfit, which she got last minute from an online clothing store, Selfie Leslie, for only $120 – the athlete faced criticism over her wedding-day hairstyle.
According to PEOPLE, “For the occasion, Biles styled her hair into a high ponytail with waves, and haters called out the appearance of her edges, or the hair on her forehead.”
Once she shared the wedding pictures on her Instagram, fans rushed to compliment the gymnast on her wedding dress and overall wedding look. But many others disliked the way she wore her hair and resorted to trolling and criticism.
Responding to the trolls, many fans took to Twitter, supported Biles for her wedding day look, and asked her haters to mind their own business.
“Simone Biles is one of THEE top gymnasts we’ve ever seen, has overcame situations of abuse and other obstacles in her childhood, has defined her own success and found love and is now happily married… And y’all worried about her hair…..?!” one wrote.
“Your natural hair hasn’t seen the sun or shampoo since you were 14 but you want to come for Simone biles because she doesn’t hate her hair like you and your Mama do,” another said.
“Black women have got to do better. There is no way there should be this much discourse around THEE SIMONE BILES’s natural hair being worn at her wedding. Decolonize yourselves and clap for another Black woman. I promise it will be okay,” a third added.
Responding to one of her defenders, Biles hit out at her haters and wrote on Twitter,
“i think they also forget i live in HOUSTON TEXAS & I sweat those out!! soon as we stepped outside for pics but they can keep complaining idc idc idc.”
The courthouse ceremony came out of necessity, and the pair will have a destination wedding at some other location (which she has yet to reveal), and 140 guests will attend it.
“We had to get married ‘legally’ in the U.S. – since our wedding will be a destination wedding,” Biles wrote on her Instagram Story. “We will be having a wedding in a couple of weeks.”
