Ben & Alice Garratt, from North London, moved to Kyiv last December for the birth of their surrogate baby. After having their surrogate baby, Raphael, the couple stayed there for seven weeks. But then, tension began to rise as things became problematic in Ukraine.
The Foreign Office warned them to return home on February 11th, but they didn’t have the necessary documents for Raphael yet, so they stayed to get everything resolved for their son. He had a two-hour interview at the passport office in Kyiv.
They needed an emergency travel document, an alternative to a passport, to prove their son was a British Citizen. Mr. Garratt spoke about how their situation was:
“getting frustrating because we’re being told by the UK government to leave the country… and we still don’t have the document we need”.
After getting everything sorted, the couple and their son got back safely to the UK on Tuesday. A relieved Mr. Garratt, now among family and friends, said:
“It’s great to be home,”
“It’s a huge relief, given the situation with Russia, to be away from that.”
“And also great to be near our family and friends – all of Rafi’s grandparents were at our house when we got back, playing with him.”
